Finished my NAUI Tech Instructor Training...
Yesterday I got signed off as NAUI’s newest Technical Instructor! For the time being, I’m only going to teach Intro to Tech, as that’s where I feel I can make the biggest impact. Intro focuses on developing the core fundamentals needed for technical diving, creating a solid platform for aspiring tec...

I've got a rather plain one...simply the nickname many of my friends call me. Just my initials, shortened....BDub, for BW (Brian Wiederspan)

Re: Anybody diving a DC Z-tech?
I have one. Good suit, not as flexible as a TLS350, more like a CLX450. I had DC take an inch off the legs and replace the boots, and I'll probably send it out to have socks put on it at some point. How long have you been home....10 minutes? And you're already back at it? I have one and really like...

Re: Wet Gloves?
I'm not disagreeing. And yes, Matt is a freak of nature. :naka: By which I mean, he also does open circuit decompression dives in 45 degree water in wet gloves. I'm absolutely not recommending this to anyone, but apparently it can be done- just not by me. I have no idea how he does it. My hands are...

Re: What makes a diver a "good" diver?
To me, a good dive is someone with good situational awareness, good contact and communication, is safe, and is always looking to improve. Sure buoyancy, trim, kicks are some signs of a good diver, but getting good at those requires practice and experience. I've dived with people (typically newer div...

Those pictures are awesome....
So what are currents like? Are the dives all drifts? If so, how fast does it get up there?

3 + 1 at Alki Reef
Jeanna, Bob, and I headed out to Alki Reef Friday evening. We planned to scooter out the to reef, then clip off and kick some and also play on the scoots too. The reef is perfect for both....lot's to see and take pictures of, so clipping off and kicking around is a great time. But the rock piles are...

Re: Amazing exploration lecture
Stone's an effective and entertaining lecturer. I really enjoyed his partner's book, Beyond the Deep , about one of their expeditions in Mexico. You get a real sense for what an obsessed and driven man he is -- and I don't mean that in a bad way; obsession and drive are required to set records and ...

Re: Dry suit and temperature issues
That's what I use (polypro). I've used Under Armour under a wetsuit in Maui, when I was doing 3+ dives a day for 2 weeks, and it helped, but I actually feel colder when using Under Armour under a drysuit, personally.

Re: Oil Dock Monkey Dive!
wow, looks like you guys had a ton of fun! so how does diving without a BC work, exactly? are you relying on the scooter to maintain a consistent depth? what happens when you stop forward motion, do you ascend or descend? You set your weighting so that you can use your drysuit for any buoyancy you ...

Oil Dock Monkey Dive!
SLundy, Jeanna, and I monkey'd the Edmonds Oil Dock this past weekend. For those of you not familiar with monkey diving, you simply sling a bottle (al80 or al40) like a deco bottle....no wing, no tank your back. With the bottle falling into the slipstream, and no drag from the wing, you can really g...

Re: Scootering Alki Reef
I really want to go back and do that dive in the day time -- the only time I've done it was at night. And I want to do it with somebody who will clip off the scooter and kick dive the actual site, too! It looked like a prime place to find a lot of critters, but we flashed past them :-) It is a perf...

Scootering Alki Reef
Lundy, Jeanna, and I made a run to Alki Reef yesterday. None of had done it from shore on scoots before, and we all had been wanting to, and what a great morning for a dive! After getting some headings and info from Steding and Richard we gave it a try. Man, what a fantastic scooter dive! We were on...

Re: Instructor Liability Thread - split from "Diver Death in HC"
OUr DM instructor has told us repeatedly that, wherever we go to dive, DON'T tell anybody we're DM's. When we make it to Instructor, likewise: don't tell anybody. He says that even if you're not working in a professional capacity, if somebody knows you're at that level, someone on the boat or in th...
