Re: Mask nose bleeds
Probably one of the more useful things newer divers with clearing issues can do is a few dives with no other objective then a VERY SLOW shore descent while paying a LOT of attention to sensations in their ears and sinuses, which means around the nose area, you really don't feel anything IN your nose...

Re: Mask nose bleeds
Early and often is PHYSICALLY the same for everyone. You do not overcome the physics of pressure. PHYSIOLOGICALLY folks have different passages so clearing is so pathetically easy for some they don't even have to think about it. Some folks have to work hard, some have to work hard AND throw medicati...

Re: Mask nose bleeds
Ear clearing should ALWAYS be easy----OFTEN and EASY. The rate of pressure buildup under water is fast and significant. You (almost) cannot clear your sinuses but YOU CAN squeeze them. On your next dive pay a LOT of attention to descent rate and sensations to the side of your nose, under your eyes, ...

Re: GPO taken at Redondo-where to put your outrage
Yes, they'll take data from this whole week. Dove the Dome today. Pretty remarkable. Able to bring 2 wolf eels and 2 dogfish right up to the window so kids could watch them eat. Got my fingers about sucked off by the strugeon, then turn around and feed halibut and sad eyed Rockfish. Don't even talk ...

Re: GPO taken at Redondo-where to put your outrage
Here are specific instruction from the Aquarium: Divers should report all sightings in Puget Sound; south of Keystone on Whidbey Island and from Deception Pass southward Information requested is: • Date • Time of day • Exact dive site • Exact depth • Den information • Indication of octopus size (ten...

Re: NiMH Battery Questions
The only way to really test rechargeables is a load bearing capacity test. Voltage tests alone are almost completely worthless. That means > fully charge it, then put under a known load and measure the output until it completes (appropriate low voltage). This is what you can do with the wattmeter. W...

Re: NiMH Battery Questions
Why, thank you, thank you very much! Like a lot of info that comes by some serious digging, reading, sifting, and mistakes. I've only recently learned of the issues with high mA NiMh batteries. I've got some 2500's and indeed, they are crap. I've got 1600's that do much better and been around 4x lon...

Re: Flying with a li-on battery (NHZ please)
Make sure your battery is charged, as it's helpful to just turn the thing on to demo that it's really what you're claiming. Going forward I would recommend a partial charge. Lion batteries are capable of catastrophic ignition if improperly handled (shorted) in a fully charged state. They don't like...

Re: NiMH Battery Questions
It sounds like a battery issue to me. Not familiar with that 'pack'. Is it soldered together or can the individual cells be removed? What are the mAh ratings of the individual cells? Salvo is not terribly helpful: http://www.salvodiving.com/faq#5 If a soldered pack, you may be looking for replacemen...

Re: Mukilteo Lighthouse Park - NO diving?
I'd have to support Jake on this. Having worked with the City and Parks Dept. over the Water Taxi issue I can assure you that they have might on their side, and feel like they have the 'right'. They also have to consider overall public safety for the largest # of people for a public use facility. Ri...

Re: Puget Sound Georgia Basin Ecosystem conference report
Thank you for going and reporting. Your energy, enthusiasm, and dedication are inspiring and remarkable. I think a lot of divers themselves really don't know the state of the Sound. Sure, they dive, and they see UW first hand but if a kid in the ghetto has never seen a farm they have no idea of what...

Ought to sneak you in to the next pumps and pipes tour. you'd probably love it.
If you (or anyone) want a personal tour just PM me and we'll set it up. Has to be a Friday, mid morning to afternoon. Next shift is the 20th. It's GPO week so it'll be busy.

Re: GPOs and dive sites...
It's semi-closed (or open) depending on how you look at it. Sound water is treated, salinated (is that a word?), heated, and put into the system. The over all system is then circulated, filtered, cleaned, ionized, etc. Whenever we clean a significant amount is siphoned off and dumped into the sewer....

Re: Stretching neck and wrist seals
Measure your head - there's your reference. FWIW women often have a more difficult time with neoprene. It doesn't stretch as much as latex. Women have a larger neck/head ratio so the seal has to go through a larger expansion/contraction. Some guys I dive with I think the the seal has to go through a...

Re: Stretching neck and wrist seals
Stretch the neck seal over a tank. Neoprene does not have the elasticity of latex so don't leave it 'forever'. Start by checking it every hour or so. If no joy, increase the time, maybe even diameter a little. My wife had one that was VERY tight. Needed 2 people to get it off. We were conservative a...

To make sure it gets full exposure there is another clarification from Tim Carpenter. Read it in the 'primary' thread rather than stretching this one out.

Re: GPO taken at Redondo-where to put your outrage
He mentions that GPO's are hard to find this year. Are they? Some Aquarium diver realities. They don't dive in the 'real' world (Sound) as much as an active diver on this forum does-mostly way less. I dive in their environment all the time. I talk to them. I invite them on my dives. They seldom get...

Re: GPOs and dive sites...
By the way, IMHO, it's the Aquarium's focus on entertaining that causes most of the questionable behavior. Their role in educating is excellent. Reasonable expectation, unfortunately won't work. The hardest thing to get across at the Aquarium is the education. It has to be very carefully crafted an...

Re: GPOs and dive sites...
There seem to be several people that think boycotting the SA will help this situation. I don't think that's true. I'm sure they have gotten the message about this incident. The GPO count is Roland Anderson's 'baby'. He's retired and this is his last 'hurrah'. The SA staff and Roland admit that this ...

Re: GPO taken at Redondo-where to put your outrage
OK-fess up time. I pushed that one a bit. In retrospect this argument had no place associated with the Redondo incident. For that I beg the forum's grace. I'm kind of a hypocrite, I'm part of the problem-absolutely. I drive to the dive site > part of the problem. Driving to the Aquarium > part of th...

Re: GPO taken at Redondo-where to put your outrage
Ya know, I'm feeling like maybe I stuck my "excessive" personal beliefs into an area that would have been better left alone. Kind of got things off topic too much. I'm gonna shut up. That's where zealotry will get you. Glad I at least didn't crap up the other thread too much.

Re: GPO taken at Redondo-where to put your outrage
Hmm, apparently more confusing than I thought. The community is upset a GPO was taken from a common site. Sure. Energy is going into assimilating that incident. Sure. The Aquarium now has an uncomfortable public incident to deal with. Sure. I hoped to get across in the big picture that this is a rel...

GPO taken at Redondo-where to put your outrage
I decided to open a new thread on this as it's related but not. There is a general cry of 'foul' going out over this incident. But consider this---- Redondo is not a protected area: http://wdfw.wa.gov/fish/mpa/puget_sound/ GPO harversting is open: http://wdfw.wa.gov/fish/shelfish/crabreg/otherspecie...

Re: GPO at Redondo
I'm a volunteer at the Aquarium and have actually been on a collection dive with them. They are very aware of the public sentiment and the reaction to the dive community to collections at common dive sites. They do make every attempt to collect from anywhere else and usually try to just dive under t...

Re: $271 dollar fee to dive 100' Rock
John Rawlings hasn't warned the forum about this site? It's been known to be a trespassing hazard for more than 3-4 years I think. Of course info like that tends to get forgotten if not repeated. I quit diving it a long time ago. Being kind of a dead end area enforcement is mostly related to not ann...
