The Oregon Coast Aquarium is located in Newport Oregon, which is about a 2-1/2 hour drive from Portland. I just did a quick check on vacation rentals there, and it looks like there's lots to choose from. http://www.vrbo.com/vacation-rentals/usa/oregon#4212 Also, there is a La Quinta Inn right next t...

Hey guys, thank you!!!

I just got word today that the Hood Canal News is now going to be absorbed by the Puget Sound News - and they want me to continue writing about diving for that as well!

http://www.psat.wa.gov/Site_index/listserv.htm

Sounds good to me!

I'll keep you posted.

Hi guys! How cool is that?? Some of you will be in the class!!! Nice to see friendly faces. :) OK, so since this is an Oregon Coast Aquarium class, all the registration and moolah goes through them - does not ever touch my grubby paws. <drats> To register call Vallorie at 541-867-3474, Ext. 5302

Nice. You should be fine. The reason we ask for a bit of experience is that divers will need to have pretty good buoyancy so as to not disturb the fish, or the items in the exhibits. There are things like fake kelp (that you can accidentally pull out when your fins catch on it), an 'aquarium cam' wi...

Oregon Coast Aquarium Class, Saturday, Feb 10th, 2007

I teach this class only a few times each year, and it's a really cool opportunity to actually dive in the exhibits at the Oregon Coast Aquarium! Yes, YOU can be the one waving back to aquarium visitors through the glass! Little kids will adore you! Everyone loves watching the divers. The morning is ...

Hi guys! Thanks for the nice comments. Just to let you know, there are NO free courses on the horizon so far this year, so you might want to think about putting together a group of 5+ divers if you'd like me to come on up your way and teach a class. We can always do it in a shop or someone's home, e...

Not what I'd consider a 'natural' - but I caught on real quick. I remember getting VERY frustrated with my buoyancy and wanting to get that figured out real fast. Didn't take too long. I discovered underwater photography and marine life ID shortly thereafter, and haven't looked back. That was 7 year...

Hi Tom, I've had exceptionally good luck with the Maha PowerEx line of batteries from Thomas Distributing . These NiMh batteries are very popular with photographers, and the batteries I use in my strobes are still going strong after more than 6 years of constant use. The Maha chargers also work ver...

Story says the turtle was on her way to NEST when they caught it, so now they will raise it in captivity!!!

Here's hoping it will nest in captivity. And not just wither and die.

The concern is that if they let her stay wild, she'll be caught and eaten.

Yup, the disadvantages are there, that's for sure. But the color richness and depth can't be beat with digital (at least not the ones in my price range).

So, I use both depending on the type of dive.

UW Cameras - Sea&Sea MX-10 Steal of a Deal!

I've been using this camera system for years now. It's a good entry-level camera, but with optional lenses (that you can change underwater) it can do more advanced tricks too. It certainly has its limitations however. Super closeups are a problem. And it's a film camera - which most people don't wan...

Calvin, you tow it behind a boat, and the divers can hold onto it, like a scooter, but by tilting it, can maneuver up or down. (like your hand held outside a car window on the freeway!) :)

I saw the largest Orange Peel nudi I've ever seen before, in Barkley Sound this past October. We put a dive light beside it to show the size.

I recently heard there were problems with the design, and that they were looking for a graphic artist. Several had been contacted but nothing has come of it. Mike Cooper, of WSA's Board of Directors, is the one spearheading the effort. If any of you know of someone who might be interested in volunte...
