I've been looking at the tides, the weather, and the visibility and wishing I could come over there. It sounds epic. Maybe next time.

Jan: The ability to match the background makes the flounders the champion in my book, although stonefish and frogfish can be pretty hard to see. Sometimes I have to check my notes to realize what is supposed to be in my tropical photos. Your drawings really help highlight the fish. Below is another ...

Re: Whidbey Island Critters
Jan: Great pictures of a little animal which revived my memory. We had a late ichthyology lab at Shannon Point marine biology labs, ending near midnight, followed by field collecting at 6am the next morning. We decided to sleep on Shannon Point beach, rolling out our sleeping bags. We spent the nigh...

It sounds as if you made the right decision in having the surgery. Again, the tone of your posting sounds much better. Being able to work toward goals gives meaning to those of us with directed lives. Rehab can be one of your new goals. I admire your focus and perseverance.

Re: Another future diver!
You are so blessed! My wife and I expected a daughter each time. No such luck. We formed a support group with similarly handicapped friends. We called it: "Parents Without Daughters". It's not so bad. I have been able to dive with my daughter-in-law and snorkel with my grand-daughter among...

Re: Scuba divers left behind in Florida
Afterward, they told us that other divers on board were anxious to get going. So when another dive charter showed up, they asked them to pick us up and left. Wierd. As a boat captain, I would never do that but it is probably no big deal.

Re: Scuba divers left behind in Florida
I have dived hundreds of dives in developing countries (Fiji, Philipinnes, Belize), and they all had good procedures for accounting for divers. The one time I was left by a charter was right here in Puget Sound. My bottom time exceeded what they expected (I was given no guidelines on bottom time in ...

The charter recovered 28 out of 30. That's over 93%. Pretty good reliability in many industries.

Re: How...?
Pure speculation on my part, but I watch the gray whales feed in front of our house and leave scooped out places in the sand which are a good mile from the water's edge at low tide. Where this whale was found, they have about a 6 meter range in tide - pretty large. The photo looks like it could be m...

I have two dives at Fort Flagler. The first was fairly non-descript, but fun anyway. The second was populated by lumpsuckers and other neat stuff. If you want company to go there, I'm willing to give it another try.

It looks like Maya follows the family tradition - diving and photographing. Regarding bioluminescence: While delivering a yacht to Southern California at this time of year I heard the sound of porpoise spouting which caused me to step out on deck. On a magical, clear, moonless night, a pod of Dall's...

Regarding Spanish treasure ships: Since the "Spanish gold" was looted from South America, why does it become Spain's and not returned to Peru or Columbia? Do any of you historians or lawyers understand this?

Also, Kimo and Dusty2 should have had stories to share, one career Navy and the other career Army. I wish I could have been there, not only the diving, but for the companionship. ...

A second cup! You must lead a clean life. I've had a couple of hundred dives on the site where I found my WWII navy cup, but nothing. I guess I just have to keep trying.

The end of summer
As part of my equinox observance, I broke out my dry suit, re-attached the inflator hose to my reg, added weight to my belt, and dived the T-docks. Hoping for another octopus to reside, I checked the sunken boat. No octo, but lingcod lurking around. Anemones sit still for photos. Anemone5.jpg The wo...

Jan: Do you know the species of abalone in Maya's photo? If they were Pintos, where woiuld they have been harvested? Korea? I believe the commercial pinto fishery has been closed for several years. $5.99 seems like a bargain for abalone.

The handle-less cups were made for fitting into the dish washer racks of the WWII era. What a wonderful find. I found a WWII era navy coffee mug (with a handle) under the Mukilteo fuel pier a few years ago. It said "USN 1943" on the bottom. It was my preferred coffee mug. An old shipmate s...

A bypasser admonished me for taking crab. "How can you possibly kill innocent crab?" I rejoined,"Innocent crab? Hardly. These are unrepentant killers, even conscienceless cannibals." Hey, I can be as anthropomorphic as anyone. Starfish, crab,or dysentery inducing amoeba, they sur...

When did GPO eggs hatch?
I dove on the sunken boat at Mukilteo yesterday (Thursday, Sept 16) and the cavity under the boat was vacant. Many pictures of the GPO and her eggs have been posted over the last couple months. I haven't dived the sight in over a month. Another diver told me the octo and eggs were still there last T...

Re: Want to dive Puget Sound from our MacGregor
If your primary goal is to get as much diving in as possible, leave the boat and charter. If you, like me, want to cruise and dive, then by all means do so. I cruise extensively from my sailboat and dive from it as well. I dived from all of my previous boats, including a 21 ft sail boat when I still...

The three lined aeolid and the diamondback are truly works of art. Regarding sea lions: after being mauled by a group of sea lions a sea mammal specialist told me, "It is just their form of play." I don't care. I don't like being the chew toy for a 500 pound animal.
