Re: Please report any sightings on Yellow Eye & Canary Rockfish in Puget Sound

A true Young of Year (less than a year old) Canary Rockfish looks like this: canary1.jpg As they get older, they look more like this: canary6.jpg (note bright white lateral line along body) Now in contrast, here's a Yellowtail YOY: 936 (38).jpg (note yellow tail and other fins, as well as the blotch...

Re: Some kelp greenling questions from recent dives

Agreed, the first thing I wondered when reading this post is if you meant to say Painted Greenling as opposed to Kelp Greenling. Painted Greenling males turn almost completely black with brilliant white spots. The females still retain their reddish bars, but the bars turn more brown when mating. And...

Re: Please report any sightings on Yellow Eye & Canary Rockfish in Puget Sound

Marek, Here's a flow chart that I put together for REEF that can help you with your YOY IDs. YOYflowchart.jpg And more specifically here's what to look for on a Canary YOY (actually more like juvies, since these shown in Jan's photos are larger individuals) and a Yellowtail YOY. While both do have a...

Marek, your top two photos are Yellowtail Rockfish, not Canary rockfish.
Jan's are definitely Canary Rockfish however.

Coast Guard update, Wednesday morning, about 24 hours after she was reported missing. Lynne was equipped with a safety sausage and what would appear to be a Nautilus Lifeline as well. Still holding out hope, had many friends go missing off Duncan rock only to be found much later, miles away. http://...

Re: Redstripe Rockfish in Hood Canal?!

Very cool. I saw some at the horizontal barge off Shilshole many years ago and haven't seen any since. Mine were sitting on the bottom for some strange reason. Yours looks a lot older than mine - the ones I saw were about 6" I'd say? Betty saw one off Whidbey a year or two ago, and it was a la...

Redstripe Rockfish in Hood Canal?!

Rockfish Geeks, We dove the Pinnacle yesterday and were pleased to see 8 different species of rockfish swimming around. The usual Coppers, Browns and Quillbacks were hanging around close to the boulders on the bottom. There were some really large Vermilions that have been there for years - some near...

Re: Whidbey Island Critters

In the new REEF invertebrate monitoring program for the Northeast US & Canada, Dead Man's Fingers (Codium fragile - same species) is included. Another name for it is 'Oyster Thief' - when this plant grows on an oyster or scallop shell, (instead of the bottom habitat), it can become buoyant, and ...

Canon Rebel SL-1 (100D) and Ikelite Housing First impressions

I recently upgraded from a Canon G9 in an Ikelite housing w/DS-51 strobe, to a dSLR in an Ikelite housing w/ dome port, using the same DS-51 strobe. What attracted me to this was the sales pitch from the Ikelite guy at DEMA. Since I wanted better quality, but didn't want a 'Death Star' setup, he sho...

Ffdiver, That's so cool you got to dive in NY! I am jealous! I helped develop the fish and invertebrate curriculum for REEF surveyors in the NE, so I've had some exposure to the marine life there. (but not in person though!) Like you, I was astounded (and delighted) at the number of species that wer...

Re: Did It Actually Choke???

I had no idea either! OK, so stupid question here - how can a fish CHOKE if it doesn't breathe air. We breathe differently than fish, so food in our airway obviously makes us choke. Are you saying here that the fish it's eating plugs up its gills too?

Totally agree with what Alex said, and that's been my observation too. 530 (20).jpg Here's a really bad pic from Sund Rock North Wall of one of them. Come to think of it, I see more of these black colored ones in Hood Canal than other places, or maybe I've just noticed them there - happened to be th...

There is an addendum to the article now that reads, "Note: An earlier version of this article mischaracterized how well the eight divers knew each other. The group was made up of four pairs of people who knew each other well but the group as a whole first met Wednesday morning."

Re: Critter and egg ID help?

Definitely NOT Opalescent Squid Eggs - much more likely a smaller whelk (snail) of some kind.
Rick Harbo's Whelks to Whales book (2nd edition) has a great back section on eggs and to which critter they belong.
Unfortunately I don't have my copy with me, or I'd look it up for you!

Here's the list of exhibitors. As you can see, it's pretty much all warm water travel booths. Re: Dive show/H2O show in Seattle/Tacoma

I've had a chance to travel to a number of dive shows with REEF, and I have to say my most favorite show of all is the Boston Sea Rovers. It's also the smallest show of all the ones I've ever been to. Our fellow cold water divers in the Northeast have done an amazing job with this show. :notworthy: ...
