Re: Keystone turned into SundRock

Sure thing Kirsten. Getting there later in the day during the week works fine. On the weekends, you need to be early to get one of the limited parking passes.

Re: Pool shoot BtS

That's a pretty amazing setup you've got there. I can only imagine the prep that goes into doing this underwater. (I've done similarly complex lighting in various locations topside.) Your trim's looking a little off, though. ;-) I jest, but how many ankle weights did you need to keep your feet plant...

Keystone turned into SundRock

It sounds like the vis in Hood Canal hasn't improved since last weekend. I took advantage of free time on Friday to dive at Sund Rock. Actually, I woke up that morning needing a change of scenery, so threw my gear into the truck and caught the 8:40 ferry from Edmonds. Finally arrived on site sometim...

brightness of handheld light for the sound

Speaking from a product development perspective, there is a difference between a light made with low cost as the primary goal, vs a light which is designed and tested for performance and durability under more extreme conditions. Primary lights designed for technical diving need to be reliable 100m d...

Anchor line locator strobe

Agree with the above, and I will add this: In our lovely emerald green seas, trying to stay within sight of a single strobe attached to a down line is unrealistic, even in the context of a simple recreational dive. Imagine being confined to dive within a circle with a radius of 25 or 30 ft max. Besi...

Dive watch

I have a couple Seiko dive watches that I still occasionally use for diving. Sometimes it's nice to know the actual time, typically in warm water. I've given up on trying to keep my Liquivision computers calibrated to the correct time, or reading their time display under water.

Re: To many options!

Likewise at Edmonds Underwater Park, it's easy to get turned around even when following one of the lines. The bottom is so flat that it offers no directional clues. Learn to use and trust a compass.

Jeff and I are doing Sund Rock all day Friday, but if I get greedy might join you for the splash. If Keith can't make it Friday I'm betting he'll show up as well. What times are you diving at Sund for the most favorable tide/current? I'm thinking of going over on Saturday. I never bother paying att...

Those shots remind me of the "Snowfall" and "Snowball" dive sites up by Browning Pass. Both are covered almost entirely by White Plumose Anenomes.

Dominica

I can attest that the locals make some very tasty moonshine. My sister was on a cruise ship that stopped at the island quite a few years ago. She smuggled back a small bottle of the local hooch, and gave it to me for Xmas. Looks like a beautiful place to go that's not as crowded (yet) as some of the...

Scuba fins

For PNW diving, typically in a drysuit (or heavy wetsuit), the heavier F1 fins can help with trim. For travel to warmer places, the lighter fins would work well. I know several people who have switched to the Hollis F1s, and they all love them and wish they had switched sooner. I've never gotten aro...

2/25 Pilgrimage

Yeah, it was cold - somewhere around 45 degrees. I nearly gave myself an ice headache when dropping for the first time in over six weeks. Keystone is still one of my favorite spots, and was a great place to get wet again. I found my moment of Zen while hanging amidst a school of Rockfish out at the ...

Re: Alki Sea Lion

Yeah, I was once subject to some curious nibbling by a pair of young females. Same trip as the other encounter that I mentioned above. My buddy and I were finishing our safety stop next to a kelp bed, when two sea lions cautiously approached me. I did my best still hover as one slid through the kelp...

Alki Sea Lion

I love watching sea lions cavorting in the water. Their movements express such joy in the way they zoom, twirl and fly underwater. The younger ones are like curious puppies when they see divers in the water, and the older ones can be quite playful, even if a bit intimidating simply by their size. I ...

Yep, I think I've seen two crawfish in three dives on the old bridge. And a whole lot of junk - including stuff people have thrown off the bridge over the years , as well as construction debris from when the bridge sank.
Still an interesting dive maybe once a year.

A good fill in the Seattle area?

It's always nice to come back with plenty of gas. That means you had a decent reserve if stuff hit the fan. Given that many dives in Puget Sound are a bit more challenging than falling off the back of a boat into 80 degree water with 80 ft of vis, it makes sense to leave a bit more in reserve. Maybe...
