Re: From Mexico ...

I love it when the diver ahead of you disappears through the halocline. I wasn't going to mention it but another poster brought it up. IF you've liked Bob's pictures and want to give this a try, there are a few spots open on a trip to the area in October. I think the prices are pretty good, staying ...

Re: Cove 2 eats....

I'm with Bob on this -- much prefer the Luna for a post-dive debrief now. Oh well, it is there and must live with it. At least the fries are good!

Re: E-PL1 Users Group

Actually, the Blue Water package, just like Optical Ocean's, is the E-PM1 not the E-PL1 -- but I can't remember what the difference between the two are! The PM is a new version and may have a bell or whistle the PL doesn't have.

In any event, this is still a fabulous deal on a very good UW setup.

Re: E-PL1 UG Dive - May 5

I didn't know there was a club dive on May 4! Having a PEN UG meeting makes sense (Note -- I'm being generous and inviting all PEN users, hell, all EVIL users, not just us #1 owners!).

Re: E-PL1 Users Group

So the F Stop has a greater effect on the picture than shutter speed? For the most part, yes. Why? Well, the dominate light source is the strobe, correct? And how long is a strobe flash? In the neighborhood of 1/2000th to 1/5000th of a second -- so what light is coming into the sensor the rest of t...

E-PL1 UG Dive - May 4

How about an E-PL1 User's Group dive on May 4 with the previously announced NWDC Dive at Redondo? The tides look like they should be OK for a shore dive -- fairly slow flood (6.5 foot exchange) from 9:00 a.m. to 3 p.m. We'll be our own subgroup of the Club. In any event, I'm thinking, take pictures,...

Re: E-PL1 Users Group

Since your shots are strobe dependant, the shutter speed is moderately irrelevant here. A slower shutter speed lets in more ambient light and thus provides more background while a faster shutter speed lets in less ambient light and thus darkens the background. BUT, in a lot of our waters, there isn'...

Re: E-PL1 Users Group

Lynne was wondering if an E-PL 2 user should be allowed to post in this thread! I told her it was OK -- so Thank You for posting your pics. Here is one from yesterday which, I think, shows just how well the kits lens (ver. 1) on the E-PL1 can do macro: http://sphotos-b.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-snc7/5801...

Re: E-PL1 Users Group

Tom, I've been using my setup for almost three years now (I got my system from Jack in April (?) 2010) using it with an Inon D2000 strobe. For a long time I opted to shoot in Ap Priority Mode with sTTL on the strobe and shooting High Quality Jpeg. I was, and am, pleased with the results. My keys: a....

Re: E-PL1 Users Group

Yes, Canucks are welcome! Glad you found the deal before it ended and then found this thread. We really need to have an E-PL1 U.G. Dive one of these days. Anyway, I've tried to use the video both above water and under and haven't had a lot of success. What success I've had (with the first gen kit le...

Re: E-PL1 Users Group

A. I tried "Live Boost" (or whatever it is called) for the first time UW today. I found it very useful because I had the same issues described above (very dark screen and thus hard to ID what I was seeing). I was afraid, because of what I had read, that the review image would also be boost...

Re: E-PL1 Users Group

BTW, I just picked up the "Pen E-PL1 for Dummies" book that I ordered through Amazon (about $18 total). I've just started to peruse it but having used the E-PL1 for a couple of years now, I'm pretty familiar. OTOH, if it is new to you, might be worth getting -- and yes, I think it was wort...

Re: E-PL1 Users Group

I'm using the Inon D2000 which is optical and use the "sTTL" (simulated TTL) setting. I've tried using manual and I just don't see enough difference to make it worth my while -- lazy person that I am.

Re: Interesting article from John Chatterton

While I wasn't planning on responding in this thread (having attempted to make my points on the SB threads), here are some of my thoughts on Chatterton's article: I was taught "old school" diving in 1966 and we used "the bible" -- The New Science of Skin and Scuba Diving -- as I ...

I tried to enter last year and have no idea if my pictures were entered and considered. I do know I didn't get any notice of anything and didn't see any of my pictures there. Won't be attempting to enter this year. Rick will be at the Moss Bay Dive Club meeting, Tuesday, March 5 in Kirkland if you'd...

Re: E-PL1 Users Group

a. I shoot Canon topside too (unless I only have the Pen).

b. Deal is back on at Adorama -- pass the word.

c. The housing is now only $299 -- might be cheaper than having it serviced.

Re: Outrageous Deal on Camera and Housing

The second E-PL1 body I got was a combo with the telephoto. Last week Lynne and I did a couple of photo walks using two different cameras -- E-PL1 with the 40-150 lens and the Canon Tsi with a similar lens. You judge the difference: E-PL1 (on a cloudy day): http://sphotos-b.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-prn1...

Re: Outrageous Deal on Camera and Housing

While I now shoot RAW +Jpeg, for a long time I just shot Jpegs. Honestly, I can't see the difference but then I'm shooting mostly Macro with a strobe so white balance/color temp hasn't been much of an issue. There should be a download for Elements 8 to handle the RAW format -- I've found one and am ...

Re: Outrageous Deal on Camera and Housing

It's an interesting issue trying to compare a PnS like the G10 with and "EVIL" like the E-PL1. The G10 is (by all reports) a good camera and one that few people will "max out." That written, the biggest differences between a camera like the G10 and an EVIL (electronic viewfinder,...

Re: E-PL1 Users Group

Jenn, I'm not noticing any particular amount of noise. From a trip to Loreto, Mexico in June -- taken with my E-PL1 and either my 14-42mm or 40-150 mm lens. These are up on Facebook so are pretty reduced: http://sphotos-a.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-snc6/208846_4046724967360_859789228_n.jpg http://sphotos-...
