Re: Redondo Parking reopening Monday June 15th
I assume they would have to open with the parking and allowing use of the park. Is there a Des Moines local who can do a site check Monday?

Re: UW Camera Equipment "Sale"
I looked at the Backscatter sale as well and did bite on something cool and it seems to be a legitimate deal. Backscatter Mini-Flash / Snoot combo for $314. In December when released it was $499. https://wetpixel.com/articles/backscatter-announces-mf-1-mini-flash-and-os-1-optical-snoot The MF-1 Mini...

Welcome to the local diving community! Let's us know when your classes are done and you can join some dives. If have any equipment questions let us know. There is a bit of specialized gear for cold water diving in comfort and everyone take a while to get dialed in.

Re: Galapagos on the Deep Blue
Really cool iguana photos. How close did you get to the whale shark? I remember how hard it was to get a shot of one with good white balance at that depth. Looks like you were at 60-70ft? We were probably around 60 feet when the whale shark came by. I was out to the right flank of the diver group a...

Wow! I played that full screen on my 32" desktop PC monitor and I had to back away from the desk it was so intense and close up. If you are only watching this on a tiny phone screen I strongly recommend the Full Screen HD experience! Incredible shots and editing Stephen! I can really see how yo...

Re: Galapagos on the Deep Blue
Glad you like the photos! The two days at Darwin's Arch were full of surprises including 200-300 Bottlenose Dolphins that buzzed our crew many times, especially when we at the surface towards the end of dives. Lots of amazing interactive experiences. This picture has about 35 dolphins in frame! Gala...

Galapagos on the Deep Blue
I returned last week from a fantastic trip to Galapagos from a 10 day trip on Master Liveaboard's "Deep Blue". It was a really great trip that delivered on all counts. It was my second trip to the islands and this one was even better than the first. Last time was in September on a differen...

Re: Hornby Island Sea Lions 2020-01
Quite an adventure Derek! Thanks for sharing and the awesome action shots. I went up there two years ago for the Sea Lions in January. We didn't get the snow and below freezing temps but boy did we get wind! I did the longer stay for 5 days and we didn't dive for at least 1 and 1/2 days on the trip....

Re: How do you store and travel with your photography equipment?
For air travel I use a rolling carry on photo bag from ThinkTank. These are pretty pricey, but there are similar products for a lot less. I found this on Amazon which looks like a great alternative. For PNW road trips to BC and such I use a much bigger Pelican case. The pelican style hard cases are ...

Re: 2 lower power strobes vs 1 high power strobe
BTW - I would not consider the Inon 240 to be a low powered strobe. It may not be quite as beefy as the 330 or the latest S&S's but that model is more than adequate for awesome Wide Angle or Macro shots. Some of the best photographers around are using the 240's with amazing results. Your photos ...

ThThTh 1/2 - First dive of the year!
Another fine time at Redondo to ring in the new year. The weather cooperated for the dive window, but earlier winds had stirred up a bunch of sediment in the shallows. Sadly no lumpies as a result, plus it seemed like much of the brown kelp was gone. Plenty of other action with squid, octos, and som...

Re: Photo upload issue
My guess is that the board software has some sort of string-parsing defect that is causing it to choke and do wrong things when ingesting metadata. I've never actually hit this problem before the last week or so. Could be that some change to the board software introduced the bug OR some change to Li...

ThThTh 12/12 - Lumpy and Photo Upload edition
I tried to post these pics from LAST thursday's Redondo adventures, but was thwarted by a refusal of the board software to take half the photos. (Turns out it's choking on some metadata in the JPG and limiting LR export to exclude most metadata fixes it) This dive was another lump-hunt for me and ma...

Photo upload issue
I ran into a problem where a couple of photos are not accepted by the attachment upload feature. I get a warning that the image dimensions can't be determined. These are photos exported by Lightroom at 2000 pixels, but only two of the same batch can't be read. I tried a few different things like exp...
