Re: This happened on our dive today

I saw this first on Facebook when someone else commented, then on reddit: http://www.reddit.com/r/AnimalsBeingJerks/comments/26l38b/rockfish_feels_like_calimari_for_dinner_nibbles/ You aren't by chance "scubadger" are you? Because I'm also super upset I did not think of that name first!! W...

Re: Rare sighting for PT

We used to get them quite a bit in net collections off the railroad beach, or off the marine center pier, but quite often they were much smaller. I've seen them that size a few times diving under the PTMSC pier as well. Really neat fish!! Just have to go to places with more grass!

Re: More than a hobby?

Like everyone has said, there isn't a lot of money in diving. What it IS, however, is a marketable job skill. Depending on your field, being even Open Water certified could set you aside from other applicants. So enjoy diving, meet great people, take advantage of all the great scuba travel options t...

Re: Diving for food question

If you saw abalone I'd be impressed - they've been very rare in the Puget Sound area for quite some time. They are illegal to take. Sea urchins fall under the shellfish category and are regulated by WDFW (see page 11 of this PDF for a definition of shellfish: http://wdfw.wa.gov/publications/01500/wd...

Looks like I will be accepting an IT position at the hospital in Port Townsend. Family is pretty excited about the opportunity. As a fellow Wisconsin native (from Madison) who lived in PT for a year...I am excited for you! There are some excellent divers in the area and you WILL enjoy the diving! B...

Re: Making hard cider

Did you make a yeast starter before you pitched it? From what I read that seems to a beer brewing step that is skipped for cider and wine making which have different sugars available to the yeast. I just used boiled water that had cooled to 105F to proof the yeast per the instructions on the packag...

Re: Sea star die-off

We used to see this on occasion at the marine center - I think we determined it to be something called "starfish wasting disease" or something like that (there were a few scholarly articles we had about it). Very strange, and always fatal from what I could tell...

Re: Thursday South Sound 7/18

I realize that we're two divers with four tanks at this point...so if I understand basic math here, I think we're going to run out of air sometime around the third dive... So perhaps I'm not actually "in" for a 2pm splash, unless I can find an airfill somewhere... Well I have 2 130's/ AIR...

Re: Thursday South Sound 7/18

I'm out. Hopefully the next week. It's a good thing I'm bringing my own photographer this week, or I'd be disappointed!! Elise I would be tempted to do an earlier dive as well. The 5pm dive times are kind of flexible since alot people get off work around those times. I will have to wait and see if ...

Crabs!! Next weekend!

All right guys. I'm in the area from Thursday and I leave Monday night. I want to go out and get some crabs. Not only that (because that's easy, right?) but I need a way/place to prepare them - I'm pretty sure they wouldn't do so well in a hotel room microwave... Anyone up for a little crab boil nex...

Re: Dive Jobs @ Pt Defiance Aquarium

If I were in the area I'd definitely apply. It's more than most dive shops pay for a starting rate, and includes roughly the same skill set (plus some environmental knowledge). For zoos and aquariums these days, it's not a bad rate actually...it's not a field you enter for the money that's for sure.

Tim, go see Don and the folks at Octopus Gardens. They're very knowledgeable in local diving around PT and can point you in the direction of a dive site that's appropriate for the time you want to dive. Also, they're awesome people!
