I wish I had had some elders, mentors, or a group of folks like these when I started diving. It would have been a lot more fun and saved me a whole lotta time and money. Ahh, the pre-internet days... :rawlings:

Re: Dive info for Oahu Hawaii?

I'm headed to Oahu the second week in April, so I'm very interested in the comments here. I wrote a PM to Justleesa on ScubaBoard the other day, since she lives there and I like her style. Here's part of the conversation, starting with my intro: Hi Justleesa! I will be coming over to Oahu on a short...

Rockaway park on Bainbridge (Norrander's Reef) was ~20ft on Tuesday, before the windstorm hit.

The anemones are spawning!

I found a very nice vinyl scuba flag and alpha flag on the bottom. If the owner can describe 'em I'll mail them... Oh wait, that won't work. Ah well, finder's keepers.

Ah-Ha! This Forbes Article is equally incredulous and points to this incident being a hoax. Regarding the 'driver' of the Prius: ... reveals that Sikes and his wife Patty in 2008 filed for bankruptcy and are over $700,000 in debt. Among their creditors is Toyota Financial Services for a lease on a 2...

Accelerating Hype and the Cell Phone Response

<disbelief> So you're Joe-Toyota-Owner and your gas pedal sticks down. It could be any car. Heck, my old Subaru had a rusty throttle that would stick open on cold mornings. That made for a lively commute. You're racing down the freeway. Death is imminent. Do you... Turn off the engine... No. Put it ...

The wave is directional so unless it bounces off of something it will keep going in a straight line until it is interrupted. Kinda like a water drop in a barrel. Yeah, but the energy can also diffract around corners. Plus, it's traveling over a spheroidal, rotating surface. No straight lines. My me...

There weren't any questions that influenced my decision to get certified. I always knew I wanted to do it, and jumped in when I finally had the time and money. Typical rash foolishness on my part. During OW class, there was one question that really puzzled me: "How long can I stay down on a tan...

Cool! :partydance:

Some friends of mine captured video of one swimming vertically in the water column in the Bahamas about 10 years ago. I believe they were doing buoy maintenance in the Tongue of the Ocean (TOTO) off Andros Island at the time.

Drat! I get home late on the 20th, if the weather gods have been properly appeased.

Been to Ed's Fault a couple times with Dusty, been wanting to do the Warhawk. Have fun guys, maybe I'll catch you on the next go-around.

Or Colorado! I did it at Twin Lakes above Leadville, 12000ft high-altitude ice diving. Whoa doggies, that was fun! Breaking through, even with a drysuit on, would be a dangerous disaster, and essentially a "rescue" scenario. Yeah, but there are exceptions. I've done a lot of 'gumby suiting...

Good dive report! Norrander's (what some of us call Rockaway) is one of my favorites too. It's a beautiful reef, and the inshore areas are loaded with pretty things -- makes for a long, enjoyable safety stop.

You need to decide what kind of quality you're looking for... And prepare the pay a price for something good. Flatbed scanners with slide/film adapters will work, and they're cheap, but you're never going to get the quality of a dedicated slide scanner. For best results, I highly recommend getting s...

Oo, oo! Here's another way to calculate it... How much of the underwater world is diveable and interesting ? For the sake of argument, let's define "interesting" to mean you can see the bottom. There's 484058 miles of coastline (re: Wolfram|Alpha). As a wild-ass guess, let's say the first ...

Re: How much of the underwater world is dive able

Let's assume you stick to the traditional recreational limits, 130fsw. To calculate the 'diveable' area of the ocean, well, close to 100% is diveable, yes? That assumes it's not covered in ice (or else you have a big chain saw or an ice breaker). To calculate the 'diveable' volume of water, assume t...

What kind of commercial diving do you want to do? Going to commercial diving school may not be necessary for some types of jobs. Many people around here (Port Townsend) clean hulls, recover anchors, slurp out geoducks, and install anodes. Very few of them have any kind of commercial cert. Some just ...
