Re: Recharge When?

I'd encourage you to develop specific practices for different chemistries. You cannot create a universal battery policy that works equally well with all types. For example, your statement about storage charge/self-discharge. I have lithium rechargeables that will loose less than 10% of their charge ...

Re: Looking for a great inexpensive light?

Personally, if I'm going to buy one of these I am glad they didn't spend more money on a fancy lanyard. It would increase the price and I'm going to throw it away anyway since like Bob says I'm going to boltsnap it.

Re: Recharge When?

Arctic, piggybacking on Richard's last post... Charging from 50% is not the same as charging from a fully-discharged state in tems of "using up" charge cycles. In fact charging from 50% "uses up" less than half of the service life that a full discharge/charge does. So if you only...

Re: Recharge When?

Here's a tidbit about Lithium deep discharges. The Nissan Leaf EV apparently has a software controlled low-voltage cutoff that is quite high. Now why would they intentionally program a cutoff voltage that shortens the vehicle's range? Wouldn't they want to squeeze every drop of mileage out of a char...

Re: Recharge When?

Lithium low-voltage cutoff circuits prevent destroying cells, but deep discharges that never reach the cutoff voltage still shorten service life. As Lamont implies, I'd expect anyone you talk to at a Duracel 800 number is going to give you info for consumer-grade primaries (i.e., single-use alkaline...

Re: Recharge When?

What battery type are you talking about? There is no single method that is universally optimal for all battery chemistry types. Duracell's advice might work fine for NiMH, but would be abusive to lithiums.

Re: Recharge When?

You know what a deep-cycle lead acid battery is? It's just a very high amp battery that they know is going to be abused. There is nothing special about it. This was confirmed in a conversation with a chemist that works for Interstate. It suffers just as much from deep discharge as a standard battery...

Just so there's no confusion, I was joking (because I think Jake's tanks came from our awesome COO) and think prominent gear marking of some kind (name, initials, turtle stickers, whatever) is a very practical thing to have both in and out of the water.

Re: Looking for a great inexpensive light?

I look at it this way: When people are passionate about something they will often make sacrifices in other areas of their life. You might look at someone who has invested $10,000 in rebreather training and equipment and think "Well I don't have that kind of money to spend on toys! Why couldn't ...

This is an interesting thread. Illustrates a big change. When did we start thinking a flashlight that cost $90 is inexpensive? Must be we are part of the 1%, eh? Context my friend. It's no more a "flashlight" than body-armor is a "vest". It's "inexpensive" in the conte...

Re: Looking for a great inexpensive light?

I would expect some dimming across the burn-time. An alkaline C cell (highest quality) can put out roughly 8 watts for 1 hour. With 3 you have the capacity of 24 watt hours. The emitter in this light draws 10 watts at max output (the claimed 1k lumen), so you can see that it would be capable of max ...

I'm with Richard. Contact the insurance commissioner. Insurance is state regulated and it's the commissioner's job to go after bad insurers. I'm afraid the AG isn't going to be interested, but the IC just might.

Re: 1st and reg for a sling bottle...

Jeff, take Richard's advice (I like camerone's too) and get a flood-tolerant reg. Not all are, and it's a high risk event for a slung bottle. Also, button pressure gauges perform poorly. Get a real SPG on a 6 in. hose. Check any of the many how-tos on stage rigging to see how to loop it back and tie...

In winter it won't matter much although you may want to block off the louvers so you can preheat the compressor to 40F+ before starting. I don't know compressors, but that's a good point for machinery in general. Everybody seems to understand that "above operating temp" is very bad. What ...
