I didn't mean this as a direct teaser for the conference. This was the first dive on the wreck. Up until you actually dive a new wreck, it is very hard to get an ID of the wreck, which means it is also very hard to figure out the history. It it seldom we actually find the name on the wreck in a way ...

Lake Washington: The Phoenix

This afternoon, SCRET dove the third of three new targets we've located in the area just north of the 520 bridge in Lake Washington. The side-scan sonar images we had provided all information we had on the wreck before the dive, and hinted that it was an intact wreck, about 50' long, with a superstr...

Regarding the mines -- they often still find mines in the Baltic Sea, dating from WWII. They are now extremely volatile and have to blown up ASAP whenever they are found.

I've dove the P(B)4Y-2 about a dozen times, but I noticed something new on my last dive on it, late last week. On the top of the wreck are two pretty large hatches. We were checking out the tail one of these, peeking into the wreck, when I spotted something in the tail end on the starboard side in t...

The wreck was found a few weeks ago on side-scan sonar by John Sharps and Innerspace Exploration. The SCRET team of Walter Jaccard and I dove the virgin wreck a few weeks back to try to identify if this really is the Success or not, with surface support from Steve Coffman and John Sharps. We came ba...

The days of the $125 AL80 are gone. Even the used ones are more nowadays. Go with steels the price difference isn't very much anymore. The price difference on that Aqualung is about 2 overhauls. E.g. if you get it overhauled annually somewhere around year 3 the LDS price with warranty starts paying...

Being able to function as a team makes diving unbelievably easier. I cant stress this enough. Rob's example of cave diving (with failures thrown at us) with someone we never met before basically sums up why we like GUE so much. I don't think GUE/DIR has the market on diving as a team. I dive with 2...

If you dive the Governor without VTS clearance, then you're really asking for trouble on many levels. It's in the middle of the freakin' shipping lane. Philosophically, my stance is that if there are people who have an interest in a wreck for one reason or another, it's only a good thing to let them...

Thanks for posting! Openness about things that go wrong is a good thing. I'm sorry they had a bad dive (though no-one got hurt).

What were your learnings from this incident?

Curt, you 'ol wing-maggot, you may be on to something here. I must admit when I saw the tail it WAS hanging there. Elevator and rudder controls were visible as was the wiring. Back then it was dropped directly below the main fuselage. The rivets were quite obvious in their corroded state. However.....

There is also information at http://www.scret.org/Privateer/Privateer.htm SCRET divers dive these planes quite regularly, and they are very pleasant targets to dive. Visibility can be challenging, but diving at the right time of the year can give you some stunning visibility on these targets too. It...

Re: Bounce dives?

I think that I know what bounce dives are, but just to clarify, could someone explain it to me? My understanding of it, is that it is where the divers shot for a specific depth, go right down, and then start to head back up to the surface. Is this correct? If this is what a bounce dive is, why was ...

The Submerged Cultural Resources Exploration Team (SCRET; http://www.scret.org ) has released its second newsletter for 2006. Here is another plug for Grateful Diver's GAS MANAGEMENT & PLANNING classes. Whether you're a new diver or are about to do your 10,000th dive, you will take something away from this class - even if it is a total review for you and you walk away knowing you're completely up to date and practiced...

We didn't run any line. Just short little penetrations and then in the Saskatchewan we just went really really slow follow the leader style. Vis was really really clear so it wasn't an issue for lines... Line is SOP for overhead environments, I won't enter any overhead without line. Speed is not th...
