Re: Humboldt squid at Cove 2 today ...
FYI- It seems that it's more likely that this isn't a Humboldt squid but more likely a Robust Clubhook Squid Moroteuthis robusta. In general ~3 to 4 ft for Humboldt Squid Dosidicus gigas, ~5 to 7 ft for Robust Clubhook Squid Moroteuthis robusta This is from a friend at the aquarium: It's quite commo...

Re: Humboldt squid at Cove 2 today ...
You have to remember one thing how long have we been keeping good records on both sports and commercial fish catches? Current to 10 yrs ago very good, 10-20 good, 20-30 okay, 30-100 crap. If you talk with the old timer fisherman they did not want records kept of anything especially any by-catch. Ta...

Re: Humboldt squid at Cove 2 today ...
Nice!. I'm glad you always travel with camera these days Bob! Now get out there and be the first to get a picture in the water.
I guess I'm glad to know that I could see one at Cove 2. Ok, Humbolt Squid, Mola-Mola, and Pacific Electric Ray on the possible to see around here list!

Re: Goby lookin thing
Lamont, regarding your fish...yeah it is puzzling. I mentioned the first group including the snake prickleback just because they resemble what you describe and the prickleback moves as you describe except that they are all along the bottom. I mentioned the walleye pollock and others simply because I...

Re: Goby lookin thing
I've only seen a sablefish at the Seattle Aquarium...I don't get it either...why don't we see them diving. I don't know of anyone know has seen one diving. Long, long ago when I used to volunteer at the Seattle aquarium we'd set traps off the pier there and often caught juvenile sablefish, so I kno...

Re: Goby lookin thing
So there's this fish we saw yesterday at Alki Pipeline that I was wondering if someone could come up with an ID on based on my recollection of it. Its shape and size was roughly like that of a Goby. It was white or beige in color. It was shallow at 20-30 feet It did not rest on the bottom, but swam...

Re: Goby lookin thing
Hmm, I liked your first idea best, pac cod or tomcod. PS rockfish still look like rockfish- not goby-like at all, don't bend their body like that, and are usually easy to approach. Which reminds me- anyone out there ever run into sablefish? There should be a lot of them around but I've never seen o...

Re: SKYLINE WALL 6/24
Wow...4:30am-6:00am would be much better if you had to go on this day. You should expect to have a current of 2 knots or more trying to push you back toward the beach at the time you plan to be there (in Rosario Strait anyway). There is a 12 foot exchange going on during that time. At least it shoul...

Re: Whytecliffe Park - and beyond
What an interesting story! Good for you that you were able to replace your camera as if it was a pair of socks! I will keep in mind that sunlight and cameras+housings do not mix. Despite your technical problems you managed to take nice pictures. My regular buddy and I wanted to go diving at Whytecl...

Re: Who has summited Rainier?
There are cheaper and possibly better ways to do Rainier than with Rainier Mountaineering. I used to work in Tacoma and Fort Steilicoom had a month long night class once a year taught by the head of Tacoma Mountain Rescue. Some gear can be rented. The cost of the class was nominal. We started from t...

Re: Raja Binoculata egg casings, wow they are big!!
After all these years and I've never stumbled upon an Raja Binoculata egg casing, the egg casing of a skate comonly known as the big skate which grows up to 6 ft. Did a dive in Mukulteo with a friend today and found the sea floor littered with them. If you have never seen one, they are huge. the fi...

I wasn't worried but maybe it was the sunny day, Coke and candy bar provided during the repairs and the fact that I really wanted to go to Waterman!Jeff Kruse wrote: But we had a great dive! The STROKE didnt leave us stranded.

I just found this free online basic boating coarse for anyone who is interested. http://www.boatingbasicsonline.com/content/general/index.php Nice, but, it doesn't appear that it meets the requirements for the Boating Education requirement in Washington. Re: Best practices and gear for boat diving
Best thread ever! I don't have a boat but like to know what 's going on when I am on a boat. I've been on a few private boats where I don't think the captain knew even as much as is contained in this thread!

Re: Agate redux
Oh I don't doubt that its possible and that it can work. More along the line of will it work (reliably enough). You sound like Uncle Pug, "eh what could go wrong, we'll just flag down a boat if we get lost" lol. I'm just trying to make the point that a boat is not necessarily safer. It's ...

This also illustrates another point and why not illustrate another point  Sometimes dives are done that are serious dives but aren't taken seriously because a boat (or scooter) is involved. This dive can also be done as a shore drift dive. Get in near the bridge from shore and get out a mi...

It seems to me that the sweat spot of most dives in the San Juan's is 80 fsw to 110 fsw at least. I usually drop down to 120 fsw on a wall in the SJ's and if the life is as good at 100fsw then I head on back up there for more bottom time. It's always different than the area above 80 it seems to me.

Re: Open Water Day 1, Cove 2
Entertaining post Paul. It wasn't until after my OW classes were over that I realized that you can swim on the surface on your back. I think that's the last time I swam on the surface face down and yes the last time I used a snorkel for scuba diving as well!
