SCUBA Up or Down Or?

This thread was prompted by my observations on my last trip to Oahu all the Liveaboard "specials" ads I'm receiving and the NWDC Activity thread. It seems to me that interest is generally down. Not nearly as many people dragging SCUBA gear around. Not as many dive company vans around. Comp...

Re: NWDC Activity...

A couple qustions: Is participation in SCUBA down? Just back from a trip to Oahu. Used to be a steady stream of dive shop vehicles at the hotel each morning. Not this time. One of the larger dive shops is no longer in business. I see notes on this board that some shops in the PNW are closed. Maybe S...

Re: Cheap started point and shoot camera?

I used a canon A640 for along time, and got amazing pictures, norris has my old set up, so you can get good shots on a point and shoot.. it's all in the user, not the camera Yes, indeed. The 620/640 etc are excellent cameras to learn with. Plus, they are good enough to tke some excellent images. Fr...

Re: Cheap started point and shoot camera?

I have a Canon A620 and the Canon UW housing that goes with it. The housing has never been in the water. The A620 hasn't been used for quite some time (I've been a bit busy with other things.) Also, have a carrying case and an underwater flash. The flash has never been wet. I'm not going to give the...

Great testimony. Thank you. Cannot say too much about a lifestyle that puts physical and mental fitness first. For me variety is a big part of keeping motivated year in and year out. So, I'm starting to play a bit with yoga. Guess that must be the flavor of the year eh? My text book is: "The Sc...

We are bound together

We are bound together as if by invisible rope. Today, as part of rehab, I'm walking on soft sand next to the ocean. Of course on the irregular and soft surface I stagger a bit. This young guy who was retrieving beach chairs asked if I was OK. I explained I'd had major spine surgery and was now worki...

Re: Keep it simple.

Normally the ends of tied (SPG and other) knots are smashed with a hot lighter or something to keep them from fraying and hold everything in place. If that's still not enough, you can put a dab of super glue on your knots - they will outlast the line then. Zip ties are ok, but in addition to breaka...

Re: Keep it simple.

Depends on what kind of zip ties you are talking about. The ones you pick up at Fred's can troublesome. On the other hand heavy duty zip ties from a hardware or specialty store are pretty immune to most any insult including abrasion. No knot tying to add weight and bulk and a fraying potential. Ther...

I'm pleased you are going to be heading back into the water. I wish I were going with you. -Curt Me too. It would be fun to do some of those shallow, easy dives where you don't actually need either a computer or even tables. Docs cleared me long ago. But, reality is that it is a ways yet before I c...

Key Largo - April

I hope I'm not jinxing myself. But another nerve group woke up a little while ago so I'm planning my Get Wet Trip. I like Key Largo so that is probably where I'll go. Plan will be for April unless some info says I should go at a different time. Never been there in April. Weather? Water? Lodging is g...

Re: Florida diving accident

Fact is we don't really know what happened. More than that we don't know the cause. It is really easy to point fingers at someone and criticize. In other venues people are injured or die when things don't go well. The after event forensic evidence may point one way when in fact something else happen...

Re: Interesting TED talk w/ Graham Hawkes

Fits with Science Friday yesterday. One of the interviewee's comments boiled down to saying that our species is very much at risk because we neither know very much nor are very motivated to do anything about what we do know, let alone discover more.

An issue of perspective.

Target, WalMart, FredMeyer, etc.

I've used calf high and crew length dress socks with success. Cheap, light, not very water absorbent, disposable, dry fast, do the job. What not to like?

Re: Fin/foot problem(s)

Had the same problem. Bought some cheap synthetic dress socks. Made sure the socks fit snugly, not tight or loose. No more problem. I plan to use them again soon. By the way the same tactic works for tender feet on land. Read Bob's post. He is the only other person I've met who does the sock bit. Gr...

I was just about to email you to find out how it was going in Fairbanks. For us, this was unusually cold weather. Since my boat is iced in, I have been reduced to taking hikes and walks. I'm glad you enjoyed your time here. We probably go to Seattle about as often as you do, but usually enjoy it wh...
