Sequim Bay Foray

We did a dive in Sequim Bay yesterday, looking for the wreck on the chart (below) and old bottles. Didn't find the wreck; I suspect it's rotted away to nothing by now. Put in a boat at the nearby Port Williams ramp in Marlyn Nelson County Park, and zipped around to the inside of Travis Spit. The spi...

Yeah and they're still selling snake oil today, just packaged differently. :thumb3d:

Re: The Bottle Thread

Pretty quiet on the bottle thread lately. Let's dig it up again!

Latest finds in Port Townsend bay... The Pacific & Puget Sound Soda bottle is kinda rare, and the Ozomulsion is like snake oil from the turn of the century.

Re: Marrowstone Point Dive

Sixty: I did this dive a couple of times years ago. We entered at the point and drifted west across the north end of the island. That sounds like fun! We've approached it from the west side too, going in at the RV park down the beach. (Like you, we didn't find much.) There is a history of a couple ...

Odd copper plate found in Port Townsend

Internet hive mind, I need your help! Can you identify this thing? It's metal, about 4x4 inches, and appears to be layered copper (maybe 10 layers, +/-). It was found in Townsend Bay.

Marrowstone Point Dive

Went for a dive off of Marrowstone Point, by the USGS station in Fort Flagler. This is our third dive there and we keep finding new things. It's just down the beach from the usual Ft. Flagler dive site, but more exposed because it's right at the tip of the island. Yesterday was flat-flat-flat curren...

Point Hudson Closed

All,

FYI the contractor for replacing the south jetty at Point Hudson is moving the barge in today. The jetty is now closed to diving, probably until sometime next spring.

Here we go. Thanks to everyone who helped move critters, we relocated 4000!

Re: High Water Temperatures

Was that water column stratified or mixed? Mixed? We never hit a thermocline. Deepest part of the dive was 56F at 72ft. The water was 11°C / 52°F at Keystone at nearly all depths on Sep 3, which was evidently survivable in a 5mm wetsuit 😅 Nope, nope, I don't believe it. Can't be survivable in a 5mm...

High Water Temperatures

Yesterday we did a couple dives off of Bainbridge, at Fay Bainbridge Park. This is basically just across the straits from Ballard.

The water temperatures were warmer than I've ever seen them in Puget Sound, 57F. Anybody else seeing record temperatures?

Re: Underwater Communication and Underwater Navigation System

I've wondered if any of the cheap hobbyist microprocessors on the market would be able to accurately time an ultrasonic ping response to a pair of matched devices on a boat or shore. Two distances to known points and you could estimate a position maybe? Or are there some weird complexities involved...

Part 4. Personal Notes and Traveling Tips I was in Norway for two weeks, my first trip there. Seven of those days were for diving, and the rest either traveling or sightseeing. Most Norwegians know some English, and even reading the signs in Norwegian starts to click if you give it a try. Getting a...

Re: And now for something completely different: Diving in Norway above the Arctic Circle

Part 3. Saltstraumen, near Bodø Saltstraumen is famous for having the fastest measured tidal currents in the world. Those currents feed a lot of life, but diving is always on the slack tide, or nearly slack. On high-exchange days around the full moon the slack interval may not be long enough to hav...

And now for something completely different: Diving in Norway above the Arctic Circle

TLDR: I went to Norway for two weeks in August, sightseeing and scuba diving. I dove at Ballstad in the Lofoten Islands, and at Saltstraumen, both places above the Arctic Circle. It was terrific! Skip to the photos are at the end of the posts. :) Part 1. The Diving Trip Overview Some Norwegian folks...

Re: My 15 minutes of fame.

My wife commented on the new breakwater as we departed Point Hudson last weekend. I wondered about the effect on the benthos. There's a big team of people organizing this: WDFW, the port, the jetty contractor, Port Townsend Marine Science Center, the Maritime Center, the city of PT, REEF, a bunch o...

What is this and why is it attacking me?

To be fair, I started it. I thought it was almost dead, but no. On the actual video you can hear it hit the camera lens, and it attacked me once more off camera.

I've been working on a much simpler, economical version more geared for recreational divers -- a way to find your buddy or the boat in poor visibility.

How do octopuses know what color to change to?

I thought this was fun. Link to comic on The Nib. The argument in the comic is that mostly-colorblind octopuses know what camouflage color to use based on light polarity. For myself, as an outspoken blowhard somewhere on the ignorant end of the Dunning-Kruger curve, I of course have a different opin...
