Re: Is this anything?

I guess I ought to start turning around a bit more often and see what's out in the open. Who knows what swims by when I'm not looking - Whales, Mola Mola, Trident Nuclear Submarines, etc. May I just say how COOL THAT WAS??? And such great shots too. I think you are the only person I've ever known t...

Re: It Can't Be...Can It?

Well, definitely not a Northern/Pinto Ab. No foot/mantle, no respiratory holes, nothing. So to answer your original question, no, it couldn't be. :) As for Rock Scallop - that makes the most sense, given the mounded shape, size, and the stuff growing on it (yellow boring sponge is real typical growi...

Re: Is this anything?

Shot with a Nikon D800 and 16-35mm lens. This was the first time after about 15 years that I have ever encountered dolphins underwater in Puget Sound. Is this indeed uncommon or am I just unlucky? Dave Oh yeah, SUPER common to see these underwater. About as common as the Gray Whale sighting recentl...

Re: Crabs hiding their claws

I'm just guessing here but I think it is a defensive behavior. If you were crab sized He would raise his claws to show aggression and make himself look bigger but since you are one hell of a big fish the natural instinct would be to make himself as small and inconspicuous as possible. Hmmm, I've se...

Re: Fish ID help

I dug through my notes and found this, when I asked Jeff Christiansen about this many years ago, and here's his explanation. (in a nutshell, it could be several things): "This fish is often found with bumps on its body. These can be disease processes, or parasitism or both. The fishes lifestyle...

MY BABY! Lebbeus catalepsis, one of the species I discovered and named. First time I've heard of one from the inside waters; normally see them out at Sekiu. Awesome find! Never know where your kids will show up... Considering how LOOONG ago it was that you did your research out there at Sekiu on th...

Re: Why are all dive skins one piece?

I used to use a dive skin all the time under my 3/2 mil wetsuit when diving warm waters. The advantages: 1. Helps you to get into your wetsuit really easily. It's one piece, not two, for that reason. It usually has stirrups for the feet and thumb loops for the arms, to aid in squeezing into the wets...

Re: Fox Island West Wall

Dove here yesterday. The no parking signs only apply to the turnaround section of the bottom of the hill. Otherwise, you could park on either side of the road. No problem finding the wall really. This was my 2nd time here. First time (over a decade ago) I missed the wall - this time we found it! Ton...

Post all Pregnant/YOY Rockfish Photos/videos here!

I was in a meeting with a bunch of local agencies (NOAA, WDFW, MRCs) today regarding Rockfish monitoring, and one of the questions that arose during the meeting was when are gravid (pregnant) rockfish found in Washington, and finding a relationship between sightings of juvenile Rockfish after that. ...

Yeah, and it depends on the tide too. Lower tide can make the Vs more prominent.
Note that I didn't draw that map! The artist's name is on the bottom of it.

Re: Best B.S. story you've heard

Well, MAYBE this one's true, but.... This old guy hobbling with a cane said he and his buddy used to dive the Columbia River up near Beacon Rock, at this big deep hole. They went down, and the bottom looked like there were giant logs moving around, and came FACE TO FACE with a gigantic eyeball - it ...

Re: Madrona Point in BC

Just dove it a few weeks ago. Sink or Swim is a great shop - Todd or Jill are good ones to talk to. When you walk on the path through the woods, don't go straight ahead at the first opportunity. Instead, take the turn to the right, and keep walking with your gear on until you get to the bench area, ...

Frequently seen hiding in cracks between rocks. Rarely do you see them fully out in the open, at least I haven't.

Re: Tried Kayak diving? Got any tips?

GREAT info!! This has been a wealth of info for me. When we looked at Sit on Tops, we wound up getting the Ocean Kayak Frenzy model, because it has a much higher weight limit than the other kayaks, plus a molded area that is supposed to fit a tank. Got it at REI. We were about to purchase another on...

Re: Tried Kayak diving? Got any tips?

Great information so far!! So if you were to create a list of what you'd need above and beyond your normal dive equipment, like anchors, lines, bungees, stuff to hold your camera, etc...list it for me! How do you stow your gear (mine is a situpon kayak, no compartments, but it does have an indent in...
