That fish egg hatching is a photo contest shot! What a cool, cool capture.

Re: GUE Seattle - Mid Week Tweak - 2/4

4:30 would work, and then I might also be up for a second dive if there are any new divers who come. Archis, I have to leave for work at 0530 Thursday am, so I'm not going to be big on going out after diving. In fact, the second dive is almost a stretch :). But actually getting in the water together...

The mantas are amazing, aren't they? We did our trip with the Rocio del Mar, and we had a ball. It was worth the money.

Re: Travel Bag

We've been using those bags from Costco forever. We get two or three years out of them, before the zippers fail. They hold a TON of stuff. Unfortunately, I haven't seen them at Costco in over a year, and the price for them elsewhere is significantly more.

Re: Whidbey Island Critters

When mares are close to parturition, they look miserable -- they don't move around much, and may lose their appetites. It has always appeared to me that these extremely gravid fish look equally uncomfortable.

Re: Introduction

No particular need to "upgrade" your certification, but if has been a decade since you have been in the water, doing a refresher or even a recertification class wouldn't be a bad idea. If you are intrigued with caves, you're in a good place. There are surprisingly many cave divers in the P...

Re: Looking for buddies - NW and travel

Wow -- I'd love to get some coaching with kayaking! My husband and I are active divers and travelers. We've been putting together some trips for friends over the last few years -- we go down to Mexico generally twice a year, and have gone to the Philippines a couple of times (going back in October)....

Re: Cancun area

It sounds as though Tulum would be a good place to base yourself. There are lot of lodging options there, from all-inclusive resorts to small and fairly minimal, almost camping-type places. Lots of restaurants, some of them very good. I can give you some recommendations for Cenote guides -- they won...

Re: Sund Rock 1/17/15

The skate egg case reminds me of a funny story from my Deep Specialty, almost ten years ago now . . . We were on our way back. The AI was trying to wind up the line we had laid, and having a bit of trouble with it. My instructor dives down to the bottom and picks up a big leaf and starts pointing to...

Re: Sund Rock 1/17/15

OMG, those octo photos are contest quality. I can't even decide which one I like best; the first is utterly fabulous, but my husband sharks (enviously) that the metridium is a bit blown out. My answer was, "Who's looking at the anemone?". The third one has astonishing texture and color. Yo...

I made the mistake of asking my friends if I could borrow a set of tanks, and they said sure. I didn't think to ask what BRAND of tank I was borrowing!

Re: Faber 100 cubic foot tanks, add four pounds

Not only are they lighter, but they get very butt-light when empty. I unfortunately learned this on a staged decompression dive in Monterey, diving with one buddy I always want to do well in front of (and almost never manage it) and another who is a VERY accomplished technical diver, who didn't know...

Re: Gonna learn to dive

I got certified at 51 (almost ten years ago now!). My husband, who was recertifying after a long interval, was 57. Today, he's an instructor and I'm a divemaster, and we both are avid cave divers and hold technical certs. As long as your general health is good, this is a great sport, and it's wonder...

Re: Whidbey Island Critters

Going back a few posts . . . with the squid eggs, there is a substance in the casing which is toxic. I remember watching a video where somebody chewed on one, and their whole mouth went numb and slack. The photos of the greenling eggs, where you can see the baby fish curled up, with the eye and the ...

Re: Future of Mukilteo Diving

When we attended the city council meeting regarding the waterfront development plan, it was made quite clear that their intent is to move divers all the way to the north end (where I understand the entry is muddy). Although foot access to the T-dock beach will still be present, there will be little ...

Re: Cancun Diving

There are a couple of dive ops that seem to get good reviews and recommendations in Cancun - Manta Divers and Always Diving. Reading the reviews gives me the feeling (although it may be inaccurate) that Manta caters more to advanced divers and AD more to beginners. I do not personally know anybody w...

Re: Why are all dive skins one piece?

It's not even the first dive of the day in a wetsuit. It's the fourth, or the fifth, by which time I am regarding the wet, clammy, sticky, nasty, uncooperative neoprene straitjacket with utter loathing. Fourth dive of the day in a dry suit is the same as the first. Step into base layer, pull on suit...

What kind of shrimp is that on the red kelp, does anybody know?

Re: Why are all dive skins one piece?

I don't dive wet anywhere any more. When we were in the Red Sea and the water temps were 84 degrees, everybody teased me until I did a dive in a 3 mil suit. 30 minutes into the dive, I'm thinking, "I'm not comfortable any more.". I wasn't really COLD, but I was losing enough heat to be awa...
