Re: Worthington 77s?

I have an LP77 that *has* rusted easily. Problem: I don't know who made it. All I know is that it's cheap and crummy. Only Worthington makes LP77s, they are a relatively new style of tank designed to compete with AL80s. Is yours an older 72? Lots of companies made those. Nope, it's definitely a 77,...

Re: New thought on a rescue technique, for discussion

Depending on the hose configuration, there may also be octos and gauges clipped to D-rings or attached somehow. You'll have to make sure all of those are detached before removing the tank.

Re: Comfort Swivel

I agree about the MiFlex hoses, very flexible. That also helped with the jaw problems. If you route the hose under your arm [like I do] you'll probably need an elbow connection at your 2nd stage, perhaps a swivel. I haven't heard of the elbows failing (anyone?).

Re: Comfort Swivel

Who here has a primary second stage with a "comfort swivel" hose, and do you like it? Why? Have you ever had air leaks from the swivel or had it break or corrode? Is it extra work to clean? I have the split-ball type and I like it. I added this to my rig because I have occasional TMJ and ...

Re: Would you go?

I did that sort of trip, only it was to Espiritu Santo (Vanuatu), there was no nitrox, and I paid for it all myself. Planned on a long week of diving but after five dives and two equipment failures (blasted rental gear!) I scared the bejezus out of myself and spent the rest of the trip sipping foo-f...

Dusty, Dood! I was starting to wonder where you were -- I thought it was just bad tides keeping you away. Heal up and get back in! The only thing keeping me from the water is that evil word "work". Ugh. Today I was feeling like the usual sites are getting worn-out. I think I'll bug Kim abo...

Definitely a California Pink Whistleback anemone (Californicate Bogusii) in its post-larval stage. Or a bit of jellyfish testicle, they often look the same.

Somewhere out there now are 10 million blind shrimp, with permanent strobe after-images burned into their little eyeballs.

Re: C-C-C-Cold!

Sweet! You must be inland to see those temperatures (Fairbanks?) -- or else far to the north, with the ocean freezing up.

I think I'd skip the drysuit and go straight to a hot-water suit. And chainsaws. Could be a lot of fun. :-)

C-C-C-Cold!

Today we saw a water temp of 43F at Point Hudson (Port Townsend). It was actually nice in the water, a very relaxing dive -- but the cold air and high winds made suiting-up and the exit extremely cold. Brrrr!

What are the water temperatures looking like elsewhere in Puget Sound?

57, all cold, which is a novelty for a warm-water, fair-weather weenie like me. ;-]

And I passed my 500th dive. Woo-hoo!

Re: On spearfishing....

Spearos (at least locally) seem to only take what they are going to eat. Respectfully, I'd take another look at that assumption. I know a few who will go to a convenient site, often a popular dive location, and spear everything that moves -- with no intention of eating it. I wish it weren't so, it ...

Re: Has anyone here been to Fiji ?

I spent 6 weeks there in 2001, crawling from island to island (the only days I didn't dive were on days when I had to fly). Here's a quick comparison of the diving, YMMV: - Wananavu and the Island of Nananui-Ra... A wide variety of life, hard and soft corals, macro-critters, interesting reef topolog...

Re: what's your favorite U/W photo of yourself?

This is in the Bahamas, 2002. We were surveying and video-taping an area for laying an underwater cable and found these pits in the sea floor. I posed in the photo for scale. They look deep but are actually just big pot-holes.

I've learned that when I know a site really well, I've dove it dozens of times and can navigate around it like my own bedroom, I continue to find surprising things. (Come to think of it, I find surprising things in my bedroom too.)

And I can still get completely lost.

The plastic sack could be sealed and floating. It could happen! To open them, take two bottles and point them top-to-top. Interlock the bottle caps so the edge of one catches the edge of the other. Pull. One or the other will come off. (Don't spill the beer fer cryin' out loud!) The last unopened bo...

Re: Photoshop Elements help needed pronto!

That shape-drawing tool likes to fill-in the shape rather than drawing an outline. I don't know how to tell it to draw only the outline, so I usually end up drawing a circle-within-a-circle with an overlap filter.

Come to think of it, perhaps Paint would be easier? :la:

Re: Photoshop Elements help needed pronto!

My copy of Elements is so old I can't even find the version number. (1.0?) Anyway, I get to the shape drawing tools by right-clicking on the "Line" drawing box in the floating tool menu. A sub-menu pops up with various shapes you can draw (not just simple lines). Hope that helps. glenn

Hunting the Wild Acanthaster

Browsing though my photos I found some from Vanuatu last year. One of the dives was, uh-hm, interesting... I was the only guest diving from the boat. So the resort kept their dive masters busy by hunting crown-of-thorns sea stars. They would find them in the staghorn corals, and skewer them using lo...

Re: Oriskany Sunk Deeper: Safer or Not?

130ft max has to do with the no decompression limit. Hmm. I'm not sure I buy that. According to the NOAA 1999 no-deco air table (or table of your choice) the NDLs for 130fsw and 140fsw are both 10 minutes, and 5 minutes at 150fsw. So why cut it off at 130? Using this table, you should be able to di...
