Re: Making the best of a Orlando Vegan Dry wedding
Didn't see this thread the first time; if anyone finds it later I give a big shout out to Quiescence Diving Services in Key Largo. A great shop/charter, we've dove with them mulitple times and would gladly do so again. http://www.keylargodiving.com/ As for Florida being big... yeah, people forget th...

Re: What training do we need next
NWCID, congrats on your accomplishments -- you're well on your way to a great long time in diving, for sure. It's great to see people get the basic training, go out and USE it, then get some more training, and continue to look ahead to where they want to go. Lots of great advice here, and a few dif...

Re: Best fin for a frog kick
Oh, what a question! I love my Hollis F1s. My husband loves his Scubapro Seawing Novas. (I really, really, dislike the Novas. Really.) The thing is, it takes a few dives to really get the feel for any new fin, and to see if it really works for you. I hated the Hollis F1 the first time I tried them. ...

Re: On a Lumpier Note ...
Wow, thanks for the great shots! A night dive in that spot last year was the hilight of my dive year, really, I love the little lumpies. Hella bottom times available at 10-20 ft! But the low activity, relaxing dive and long bottom time meant hypthermia ended the dive at 70 minutes, not gas managemen...

Re: Underwater Pumpkin Carving 101
Yeah, when we do it we put weights in the pumpkin to keep them down. But you need a shockingly large amount of weight to keep them stable enough - I think we put in 5 and were still struggling. Have one buddy hold it while the other carves, if you're brave enough ;) Remember too you can't talk unde...

You've certainly got the one skill needed -- you go out and ask for what you need! Keep that up and you'll find yourself with a lot of opportunities to learn...

Anyone going up to Undersea and Hyperbaric Medical Society?
I'm (probably) going to go to the Undersea and Hyperbaric Medical Society (UHMS) meeting that's in Portland next weekend. While the material is aimed at medical professionals, they do have non-medical diver passes available for Saturday and the topics look pretty interesting. Anyone else south of Po...

A 6'1" swap there? Ee gads. Maybe we need a sign: "You must be taller than the swap to ride this site." No, wait, that doesn't work... "The swap needs to be HALF your height or less for you to ride this ride." LOL.

Re: Albany woman dies diving off south jetty in Newport, Ore
What ever happened to manually inflating your BC ? Seems divers forget how to do this step.. In a panic situation when your struggling to stay above water? if you can't remember to drop your weights it's not likely you'll remember how that drill goes! It seems that not only did she not remember to ...

Re: Albany woman dies diving off south jetty in Newport, Ore
All good points, and possible elements in this. Add to it fatigue (night dive after a full day of diving). But I still hope more information comes out. For it just seems unlikely (or, impossibly sad) to me that with two "experienced" divers someone who was at one point able to surface ends...

Albany woman dies diving off south jetty in Newport, Oregon
I am a diver in Oregon who has heard of this through other divers. I was not there, do not know the divers involved and have no information other than what's in the articles (poorly written, as they often are about dive incidents). I posted to ScubaBoard Monday, and the most information that has sur...

Thank you thank you thank you for bringing this up. A very timely post. It's something everyone should do -- and we recently discovered why. My mother-in-law died unexpectedly; she went in for a routine outpatient procedure, and to make a long story short, was taken off the ventilator four days late...

Re: SAC rate?
Lots of good points. Comparing to others is really hard; it's very helpful as a way to guage your own performance over time. You'll see it drop in your first few months of diving (assuming you are diving routinely) as you become more skilled and relaxed. In good conditions with no stress, I am aroun...

Re: Sola 600's on sale...
If I'm just a recreational diver, isn't a can light overkill? I can see if I was doing tech dives but I'm not. So as a rec diver today, light canons (can lights) seem overkill. Coupled with a real aversion to Christmas trees, I'm struggling to see the logic why a good handheld isn't just fine. I ca...

Re: Sola 600's on sale...
Go on a dive with a solid team sometime, and pay attention to their communication through light signals. Having good light, and good light discipline, makes dives far more relaxing because you can stay on the same page, and reduce task loading. I don't have to look for my buddy, because he's passin...
