The AED has been installed at Cove 2!!
The AED has been installed at Cove 2!!
A final update in a story that started 3/6/09... after more than a year of working with the City of Seattle, collecting donations, jumping through political hoops, and mitigating the objections of various City officials, the AED project is complete. After fighting battles that felt impossible to win, the "final green light" (there were a few) came and I wanted to get the AED up without any further delay. I scheduled with Josh and we installed it this morning.
The AED is inside the door of the Alki Fish & Crab Co. there at Cove 2. A sign for the AED has been placed above that door on the outside. There is an alarm on the box which will sound when it is opened - the restaurant has one key to deactivate this alarm and I have the other. The AED is ready for action, and I'll be putting some instructions on it later this week of what to do once it's been used (essentially, return it to the restaurant and contact one of several people so we can restock it).
If you go into the restaurant, please take a moment to do a quick battery check. You can look through the window on the box, and through a little window on the red AED bag to see a little flashing green light. If it's flashing green, it's good to go. If it's solid green it is self-testing (done every 24 hours), and if it's not there or you hear "chirping," please notify me and/or someone else listed on the card but leave the AED in place. I'll be making regular stops to check it and will have other people checking it as well, but a quick note/PM saying "I peeked at it and it's flashing green just fine" will always be appreciated.
I apologize to those who wanted to be part of the installation... it needed to go up asap and once the final green light was given, there was no time to announce stuff. HOWEVER, it was "too quiet" during the installation and I believe we should plan an evening of diving, pizza, beer, and laughing to properly dedicate the AED to BFO Jake and raise a little hell in his honor. I'll start another thread to plan that and hope you'll all attend.

Excellent. Glad I could help out. FWIW, if anyone reading this ever DOES have to use it- you just open the box and grab it. There's a sort of "plate" on the front of the AED that comes off, and a loud, clear voice recording starts giving you simple directions. It will not shock a victim that doesn't need to be shocked. It's more or less idiot proof. What I'm trying to say is that there's no downside to trying to use this on someone, should the need arise.

That's wonderful, Doug, and I don't even mind that I wasn't there when it was put up. I will think of Jake each time I pass it, though.

...and you'll be there for the dedication dive. I'll plan it around your schedule - it's important to me that you're there, Nils too.LCF wrote:That's wonderful, Doug, and I don't even mind that I wasn't there when it was put up. I will think of Jake each time I pass it, though.

What a wonderful memorial!
The only box you have to think outside of is the one you build around yourself.

I agree, but hope that someone will grab it if the need does arise. It's there to be used. Please educate your instructor and DM friends that it's there so they can start incorporating it into their site briefings.coachrenz wrote:Good work. Hopefully it will go unused forever!

Perhaps I am the only nob that does not know what an AED is... Im guessing it is some sort of device used to shock the heart back on a non responsive person? Perhaps someone might go into some detail on its use and proceedure???

Re: The AED has been installed at Cove 2!!
These things are starting to be pretty common in a lot of public places. But it helps to know about them to recognize them. I would encourage everyone who hasn't taken a class in their use to do so. Most fire departments offer free classes (usually it is politely mentioned that a donation would be appreciated). It is a great way to review your CPR and get some exposure to AEDs.Jaksonbrown wrote:Perhaps I am the only nob that does not know what an AED is... And thanks to the people that spearheaded the effort to get this installed at Cove 2.

Given the number of hoops that doing something sensible like this seems to always incur it's a tribute to the people that got this project through. My appreciation and gratitude.
Don't forget to thank the Alki Fish & Crab Co. for allowing it to be there.

It is nice of them to support this, although they only lease the building which is owned by Seattle parks.fmerkel wrote:Don't forget to thank the Alki Fish & Crab Co. for allowing it to be there.
Nice job Sounder

Yes, the restaurant definitely gave their "stamp of approval" on it, but it is City property so the City of Seattle had the final call. Regardless, please definitely thank them for their cooperation - they could have blocked it, but instead they embraced the idea and were great support.CaptnJack wrote:It is nice of them to support this, although they only lease the building which is owned by Seattle parks.fmerkel wrote:Don't forget to thank the Alki Fish & Crab Co. for allowing it to be there.

Excellent, Yevonne (sp?) is definitely a great asset to the collective, diver-friendly atmosphere there. I think that putting such a valuable public resource there has the added benefit of helping to illustrate to Parks how invested diver's really are in Cove1,2,3 (compared to say the ferry passengers...)Sounder wrote:Yes, the restaurant definitely gave their "stamp of approval" on it, but it is City property so the City of Seattle had the final call. Great news, thanks to all who made this happen.
One hypothetical, say a group of divers is going for a dive after Alki Fish hours of operation and the need arises...
Just a thought I had, and I do think it was a very wise decision to place the unit in a secure location. The possibility of theft is now greatly reduced.
Anywho, so glad to hear this project was successful.

Re: The AED has been installed at Cove 2!!
Doug -- Have you sent notices out to the dive shops (UW Sports, Bubbles, etc.) and the dive clubs that it is there AND that it is a result of the NWDC members? I think it would be appropriate for you, and the board, to get the "Atta boys" from the whole community.
Re: The AED has been installed at Cove 2!!
If you need it after-hours, do what you have to do. I know I wouldn't think twice. Just follow-through with the police to ensure the building is re-secured before leaving it unattended.mancub wrote:One hypothetical, say a group of divers is going for a dive after Alki Fish hours of operation and the need arises...Just a thought I had, and I do think it was a very wise decision to place the unit in a secure location. Haven't really done any of that. I know NWDN wanted to do a story on it a while back but it was still in it's infancy. I don't care about atta-boys, but I do want it to become part of every instructor's site briefing.Peter Guy wrote:Doug -- Have you sent notices out to the dive shops (UW Sports, Bubbles, etc.) and the dive clubs that it is there AND that it is a result of the NWDC members?
