It came time to dry-dock the Egabrag II and Fiji was chosen and I got to go there to keep an eye on it.
Unfortunately sometimes and somewhere during our moves my binder with all the slides was lost
and all I got are faded small color prints to which the times are not kind :(

Jan,

What an amazing photo to have Graham Hawke, Dr. Earle(Mrs. Hawke at the time) and Phil Nuytten together.

Your photo got me to thinking about some of Hawke's designs, so I looked him up on wikipedia. And guess what? The R/V Egabrag is noted for having a reporter on board and getting a great quote from Mr. Hawke. I'll let you read it for yourself:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Graham_Hawkes

Phil Nuytten, in addition to being famous for his Nuyt suits is also an incredible historian and has compiled a comprehensive history of the Aqua Lung.

Thanks again for sharing your story - this thread never fails to amaze me.

Thank YOU Sitkadiver for the link to the Hawke story. Brings back memories to details I already forgot...
I think that this is what makes me keep adding to the Memory Lane (line).
I am also getting e-mails from people who are not divers, but visited or were part of something I was involved in
and they were part of too, so maybe it is not a total waste of my time. . :)

Jan: Are the dates on this last posting right? I have never been to Attu in the winter, but I agree it is a beautiful place. Amazing wildlife, especially migrating birds and numerous artifacts from WWII littered the island. I also have not dived it. I'm game if you can arrange it.

Curt, yes, it was February 1986 when I first visited Attu. I fell in love with that island
even when it was under the blanket of snow. Too bad that it is now out of my reach,
I would sure love to dive there. Loran station is closed, I don't even know if there is
anybody living there now...
For now, back to warmer climate - testing out stuff in California ...

The "Thousand Mile War" by Bryan Garfield is a great account of the little known war in the Aleutians.

In one of my flights to Adak, the pilot showed me the weather forecast. I asked what the abbreviation "BG" meant. "Blowing gravel, Sir." The Aleuts referred it as "The birthplace of the winds." Great memories.

Jan: With the Attu segment you tell marvelous sea story. The military history, geology, fish, birds, and mammals make the Aleutians an exotic place to visit. Not to mention the weather. The people of the Caseopia let me know what a wimp I have become. Even though I own a well founded sea boat and possess abundant experience, I have no intention of sailing to Attu. A 26 year-old female crewman might change my attitude. I just checked with my wife and she said that's a no go.
