Jan: While I haven't been responding to each of your posts, I have been following them intently. I had two friends who fought in the Aleutians, and another flew (and crashed) P-38's. All are now gone. You have done more in the Aleutians than I have. On one of the trips to the islands I packed my dive gear. However, when I arrived the Navy diving officer forbid any sport diving by USN personel because of the lack of a hyperbaric chamber. Looking into the water with the abundant salmon and otters as well as the presence of wrecks really disappointed me. I especially enjoy your reports. My impression was that the visibility was really good.
Thanks.

I decided to expand on the Battle of Attu, since there was so much that made my excursions into the hills of Attu so memorable. I am surprised how few people I meet realize that American soil was actually occupied by a foreign power
during the World War II. The title "Forgotten War" is a title of series of books dealing with the war in the north and
I feel very lucky to visit that remote chunk of USA on which nobody lives and it is so difficult to get to.

Jan: I found it interesting that the GI's chose to wear Japanese clothing. I read that in order to maintain operational security, the troops were trained and equipped for desert warfare. When I mentioned this to my godfather, he said his ship brought cold-weather gear separately. He was a merchant mariner. I suspect that the clothes didn't all reach the men in time. Tough times for all involved.

Curt, thank you for info about the winter clothing being shipped via the merchant marine fleet. I did not find that mentioned in any of the research I did on the war in the Aleutians.

Jan,

I just realized you have a photo of the USCGC Storis. She was the Queen of the fleet more many years and was very well known here in Alaska.

Thank You again for this great thread.

Thanks for the link to the story of the USCGC Storis. Be first US ship to go through the Northwest Passage and circumnavigating American continent - that is some feat ! :supz:

And some more sightseeing on Attu :
