Is a DPV Class Worth Taking?

Post by Novice »

So I just bought a Sierra via the interwebs. :supz: :supz: :supz: :supz: :supz: It should be here in 3 or 4 days.

Anyone have an opinion about taking a DPV class?

yes, take one.

at the very least it should show you proper riding position and emergency procedures and get you dialed in much faster. i've done informal scooter orientation dives before and its a lot of work on my part and its imperfect and slower to get the diver over the learning curve. after having given one of these orientations, my advice was still to go take a scooter class.

Yes if the instructor's any good. Controlled crashing, turning efficiently, feedback on correct body position, and runaway scooter are all topics covered which might not be entirely obvious just goofing around. Along with hints on bouyancy control.

Just go out with a few rides with Koos and company, I learned more there than a class, plus it was free (well, sort of, now that I'm moving towards Gue'ness)

- I got a good squirt in my mouth
- I would imagine that there would be a large amount of involuntary gagging
- I don't know about you but I'm not into swallowing it

So how do you know what you don't know?

Hate to break it to you, but the GEM is pretty far from GUE-ness...

From wikipedia...

In logic an assumption is a proposition that is taken for granted, as if it were true based upon presupposition without preponderance of the facts.

Ergo, where did I say my moving towards a GUE kit had anything to do only with my GEM, as if its the only piece of dive gear I own and I'll never dive OC again?

So you either took a DPV class, or you'll be proposing to cross over your GEM training to the RB80? :angelblue:

You said "GUE-ness"
That was not specific to equipment, training, or experience.

Go ahead and mount your GEM anywhere you want. You might want to describe what you are doing instead of referencing an agency which doesn't do recreational rebreathers at all tho.

ok, hows this for specifics:

My GEM kit will have a 7ft hose, waist knife, brass and glass SPG, but isnt a 1 piece harness, nor is the GEM a GUE approved device. (Unless I got an RB80 which is GUE approved BTW). But trying to keep config the same between both rigs as similar as possible.

My OC kit will be fully ready for a fundies class Nov/December if Koos decides to do another class then. One piece harness, 7ft hose, waist knife, B&G SPG and Bottom timer.

Specific enough?

And it sounds like you assume that you are competent. Stop being obscure, have you taken a class or have you watched a few people think you have it all figured out?

I'm far from competent yet with one, but that comes with practice, not a class.
