Unholy odors

Post by olalladiver » Sun Jun 02, 2013 8:56 pm

Something crawled into my wetsuit boots and died. Least it smells like it.

Wetsuit itself is easy to turn inside out and scrub out... boots a bit harder... Any sage advice? Haven't invested in any of that wetsuit soap yet, so maybe that's my next step... Just plain old dial... I think it might not have dried quite thoroughly enough after last weeks outing. Ungh.

I'm considering calling a priest. Yeah, it's that kinda smell. You know, the kinda thing you hand over to a friend to see if you can get them to smell it after you, then giggle like a 7 year old when they do. :stir:

Sounds like my drysuit most of the time. Half the time I dont want to get out since I have to stick my head inside.

Yes I do rinse it out every few dives.

Try using some Nature's Miracle Odor Remover. Most pet stores carry it.

I use Simple Green lemon for general gear cleaning. For nasty odors, I use Mirazyme or Sink the Stink. Boots that smell really bad can be soaked in one of the enzyme cleaners (diluted) for an hour, then left to dry out without further rinsing. The enzyme will do the work.

Try rinsing and soaking your boots overnight in Head & Sholders dandruff shampoo. It seems to do the trick for my surfing wetsuit.

Cup of white vinegar in your rinse bucket. Don't rinse it out. Let it dry. They will temporarily smell like pickles, but the stink will be gone.

For dry suits, get one of those UK drysuit hangars with a built in fan, no stink.

you can also try filling your boots with a baking soda/water mix and leaving overnight.

My drysuit usually gets a complete rinse from the hose after I get home, but I usually end up turning it inside out after I am done, then hang it upside down overnight in the garage. The next day I'll flip it outside-out and hang till the outside's dry. No horrible odors that way. That may not work for those who get underwater more often than I...

Diluted simple green seems to have done the trick... I was reluctant to use any vinegar or baking soda since lots of web advice seemed to indicated that was not neoprene friendly, but maybe it's a weak enough acid/base that it's not a problem... Better safe than sorry, I figured... Not looking to buy new thermal protection any sooner than I needed to...

Will try some of the other suggestions if this doesn't stick... I didn't have any problems before just this time, so think it probably was just wet for a week and a half and that caused it to get funky (they were damp when I put them on), but confess that the boots have been neglected more than the suit, so maybe I just hit critical mass...

Thanks all... Bad smells at bay ... least these bad smells...

And yes, I've been diving around tacoma... that thread and my associated phobias just keep coming back...

I've been having this issue too and was just about to post about it. Glad I didn't have to be the one to talk about how smelly I am in public! :)

They talk about how smelly I am in public anyway. I'm just not usually the one starting the conversation. ;)

I figured that this has been tackled and solved many times before, so no sense in reinventing the wheel. Other advice I've received on the board has been solid, so figured I'd see what everyone had to say... I'm not proud.

I have some other options to try, too... should these evil olfactory demons return and haunt again.

For cleaning wetsuits we have used Sink The Stink a lot. Seems to work quiet well.

There is another enzymatic pet odor cleaning product called Petforce. Unlike Nature's Miracle, Petforce is super concentrated so your $30 gallon makes 8 gallons of juice. I'm a huge fan. If I had a stinky gear problem I'd definitely give it a try.

Hmmm... why is it every thread I touch these days descends into poo and pee?

I'll just stop typing now.

wet sheep always seem to stink too. But I never imagined them as unholy.
