The all-knowing Wikipedia says they live between 2,000 and 3,900 feet deep. Suffice to say my gas mixes don't let me go that deep...

The depth might explain their appearance.

It does. They don't have a swim bladder. Their doughy flesh is just slightly more positive than the water around them, letting them drift without requiring a swim bladder for buoyancy.

Entire that or the pressure has crushed their features to... well... a blob.
