Current insensitive boat dives?

Post by Rooinater »

So with early summer's huge exchanges rolling through... What are some of your favorite boat dive sites and launches for the large exchange days, or any current insensitive dive sites? Do you have any favorites for when the exchanges are less than favorable? The Hood Canal? or more local?

The wife and I are trying to decide on heading back down to the White Salmon to go kayaking and lava tube hunting, or diving on the weekend of the 4th of July. But the tidal exchanges are 14' or so...

That and we are trying to compile a list of sites to dive with a wider range than perfect tides.

Dive Sites:
China Wall
Shilshole Barges (be careful with summer boat traffic)
Pretty much anything on Hood Canal
Maury Island Barges
Saltwater State Park (some current but manageable)
Alki Fishing Reef (you can get current on really big exchanges but still doable)
KVI Tower (some current but manageable)
Possession Point Fingers (only on a flood - never an ebb)
Boeing Creek
100 ft Rock
The Boss
Des Moines Wreck
The Ranger
If it's really bad ya always have Lake Washington :-)

Launches:

**** Shilshole - Good for any tide, protected from the wind
** Edmonds Marina Sling only, no RIBs, $20 fee
* Mukilteo - Crappy launch, fully exposed to the wind, parking sucks and always a bunch of yahoos hanging around
*** Don Armeni (West Seattle) - Fairly good ramp, decent parking, a bit exposed to the wind but manageable
* Redondo (see Mukilteo)
**** Point Defiance - Probably the best ramp on the Sound
* Misery Point - It's the only ramp on the east side of Hood Canal, which saves about an hour drive, but you need at least a +2 tide, it's fully exposed to the wind and there is no dock
** Hood Canal Bridge - Current can rip at the boat launch. It's a long way from the dive sites
**** Pleasant Harbor - Launch at any tide, well protected, free with Discover Pass
**** Triton Cove - Any tide, well protected
**** Manchester - Great ramp if your on the other side of the sound
**** Ediz Hook - (Port Angeles) Great ramp, the place to launch for the Diamond Knot or Dungeness Crane

Some edits
China Wall (not on big floods or strong north winds)
Shilshole Barges (be careful with summer boat traffic) (avoid the vertical barge mid exchange, esp not on strong ebbs)
Pretty much anything on Hood Canal (not the sites by the bridge tho)

Some additions off the top of my head
Tolmie Barges
Wreck at Taylor Bay - just not in the middle of the exchange
Wreck of the Dreamscape (in Bremerton)
Norranders reef
Wreck of the Anna Foss
Wreck of the Dauntless

If you want to launch up north, skip Mukilteo as mentioned above and head to the 10th Street Ramp in Everett. 12 lanes and a lot of parking.

Sweet! Thank you guys for the info. I'll save the sites for later. Yeah we launched at Redondo a couple weeks ago. Not the greatest launch, and luckily it wasn't too windy. That launch made me think about getting roller bunks installed...
