Northwest Dive Club

]Mukelteo oil docks. Over the years this man made structure has created a unique and interesting habitat for muscles, dungeons crabs and schools of rat fish. That is to say the least. We got to dive there one last time today and leaving not without a tear in our eyes. Hopefully the habitat will be recreated in the years to come on the adjacent docks.

I wonder if they'll leave some of the pilings underwater...?

I sure hope some of the old pilings are left. The only problem would be they will probably not be sticking out of the water enough for the muscles to grow. Food so delicious to the crabs and fish...

They are not leaving any pilings in the water they want all of the creosote removed. It will be a barren wasteland where there once was an oasis of life. Go dive where the Edmonds oil dock used to be and see what it looks like.

We went diving at the old Edmonds oil dock location today. I wouldn't say it is a barren wasteland, there are rockpiles and the odd piling. Is actually a nice dive, but yes, so sad to see the majestic pilings gone.

Was the idea of replacing the pilings they're removing with some other structures, like rock piles, ever aired out?

Since they plan to move the ferry dock to that site, perhaps leaving some pilings at the current ferry dock would provide an equivalent dive site.

This was one of my favorite dive sites too. I even mapped it out for my Divemaster course! Was very sad to hear this news.

For many years WDFW hasn't been interested in replacement reef/structures. This may be changing, but in this case the city would need to be a vocal sponsor/advocate and honestly Mukilteo's motivation to provide scuba amenities is iffy.

Well the hotel people don't particularly like divers at the other Mukilteo site hogging the tiny parking lot and peeing in the bushes. With the new bigger better parking lot with a john available maybe its time to focus on building a decent reef there to replace the docks and open up more options for spotted shrimp harvesting when it comes...
