Edmonds Underwater Park Turns 40!
On Saturday, July 8, there will be a community get together to celebrate the fortieth birthday of the Edmonds Underwater Park, also known as the Bruce Higgins Underwater Trail System, just north of the Edmonds ferry terminal.
Festivities will kick off at 9:30 AM with dives in the Park. This is an opportunity to see several trail extensions and improvements Bruce and other volunteers have recently completed. This will be followed by a pot luck barbeque starting at noon.
Bruce Higgins, the underwater park project coordinator, will be organizing a dive with decades old SCUBA equipment: two-hose regulators, early single hose regulators, even an EXO full-face mask.
With over 25,000 visitors annually, the Edmonds Underwater Park is one of the largest tourist magnets in Snohomish County. The Park comprises 27 acres, with a comprehensive trail system that runs North-South, East-West. The abundance of marine life draws visitors for as far away as British Columbia and Oregon on a regular basis.
This is a chance to meet many of the volunteer divers who have work on this project almost every week. It is also an opportunity to chat with past volunteers, including Mike Converse, Dale Smith, and Tom Redburn, who helped in the Park from 1980 to 1994.
