Sund Rock 6 gill sighting

Post by Jeff Pack »

Well, story time now... We were diving at Sund Rock, and around 235 I heard Jeff yell and flash his light, and there was a six gill (our 6th sighting). No big deal, they usually just check us out and leave and thats what this one did, well not exactly. I tracked its eye out about 30ft and it circled back. Went totally past Jeff (didnt even care) and straight at me. It veered off about 5 feet away to my left. Circled around again, and again, then coming right at me and not veering. Oh shit. As it was about 3 feet from me I went up to avoid, and it just passed under me. At this point we'd been there 5 min, and deco was piling rapidly (65m at that point), so we boogied. Well, that was round 1. That damned shark tracked us, and circled me again at around 220'ish, but just one circle and left. Nothing up close and personal. My breathing didnt subside until we hit around 130, and I think I took a mild CO2 hit, as felt just "off" and was breathing heavier, much heavier than I usually do. Rest of the dive was uneventful, thank goodness. Damn that shark really took a liking to me (it was a female). So who said sharks arent looking for love too?

- I got a good squirt in my mouth
- I would imagine that there would be a large amount of involuntary gagging
- I don't know about you but I'm not into swallowing it

We've only encountered one adult, other 5 were juveniles.

Some people claim the HID's attract 6 gills. I'm switching to LED now :)
