Save Edmonds Underwater Park & Beach

Post by nv77 »

There's a plan to build a huge concrete overpass at the dive site along the beach. A petition is underway to redesign it for less impact. Please check it out and make your voice heard.

Definitely taking a look. But there's on small flaw on the page: "Army Core" should be "Army Corps."

Let's not give them any petty little reason to blow us off.

An update from https://www.facebook.com/saveedmondsbeach/:
I wish I had good news from observing the Edmonds Council Committee Meeting tonight discussing the concrete overpass on the beach and funding for design/planning with Parametrix, but I don't. I left convinced that they are going to try and bulldoze a decision through for approval of the $2.3 million at next Tuesday’s regular council meeting. (FYI - Based on the comments I heard during the meeting, they don't seem to believe you exist). EVERYONE needs to be there to make public comment during the meeting to stop it or they will move forward! One thing you can do now is to save the date – next Tuesday, June 18 at 7:00pm at Edmonds City Hall (I’ll update you if it changes). FYI - you don't need to be an Edmonds resident to speak during the public comments part of the meeting - many people from the greater area love the beach - so please come and speak out.
More to come soon. Just need to look through my notes and put pen to paper. Stay tuned.
Let’s save the beach!

The group on Facebook would like to get in contact with Bruce Higgins -- Can someone send him a note about what is planned?

The real underlying reason for this huge overpass is additional locations for squatter tents and shanty town accommodations.

I attended. After very long discussion the city council held a vote and decided to suspend the project (for now) noting concerns about the funding source and pushback from the community. They didn't do the public comment part of agenda as a result so not sure if it would have just been a formality or not.

A considerable crowd showed up to protest... so many that only a tiny fraction was able to get inside. The rest of us stayed outside rallying, listening to the meeting livestream on our phones, and exchanging thoughts. Most folks complained about the aesthetics, ecological impact, and cost. Two folks mentioned diving.

I'm generally not into the whole "protest rally" thing but stood up to try and explain divers are also our eyes/ears to monitor what happens underwater. A benefit of maintaining easy diving access that would be lost if closed for construction and beachside parking removed. Seemed ok for only having a minute and a half and talking unrehearsed off the top of my head although a few things I wish I said different. Here is the recording I posted in our reef.org group: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0xkRwiAFA9A

Not sure what made the biggest impact. One of the councilmembers mentioned receiving 300 emails on the topic but no way they could have missed the deafening chanting from the hallway (although not sure if they acknowledged it during the discussion).

I should also mention that although they did not vote to approve a study (at least not yet) it seemed to be the direction they were going. They wanted to establish how the project would impact the marine preserve (the biggest non-aesthetic objection besides cost). Curious what everyone's thoughts are but wonder if a study like this would effectively just counter the "environmental impact" argument to move things ahead. They could claim the environmental impact is minimal, will be offset somehow, and the only remaining priority is public safety which is the justification for the project. You think?
