Public invited to review Point No Point boat launch design

Post by thelawgoddess »

This came a few days ago. I forwarded it to Janna in case she knew of some divers who might be interested ... and she asked if I'd post it to the board. So here it is:

Public invited to review
Point No Point boat launch design

OLYMPIA - The Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) will host a public meeting on Dec. 13 to discuss the proposed design of the new boat launch at Point No Point.

The meeting will take place from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Greater Hansville Community Center, 6778 NE Buck Lake Road, which is located in Buck Lake Park on the northern end of the Kitsap Peninsula.

At the meeting, WDFW will ask the community to discuss the design for the Point No Point boat launch before the department begins seeking the permits required to build the launch, said Kristen Kuykendall, WDFW design engineer.

"Last month we presented two drawings to the Greater Hansville Area Advisory Council and now we want the community's input before we go forward," Kuykendall said. "With an approved design, WDFW will begin the permitting process, which will take about 18 months." Construction on the launch should begin in 2011 or 2012, Kuykendall said.

The launch, built in the 1920s and purchased by WDFW in 1996, was closed in January 2002 for safety reasons. Kuykendall said the department always intended to put the popular boat launch back into operation, but faced funding issues.

Then in 2007, WDFW received a $250,000 grant from the state's Recreation and Conservation Office to complete the design and obtain the necessary permits.

Kuykendall said the department will seek state and federal grants during the 2011-13 biennium to construct the boat launch.

The Dec. 13 event is the first in a series of public meetings to be held on the construction of the boat launch. Future meetings will be scheduled in the coming months to discuss parking, traffic concerns, landscaping, signage and maintenance, Kuykendall said.
