What do I need in my first aid kit to help treat Jellyfish stings?

I have hot water and vinegar with me when diving.

Vinegar has been removed from first aid for jellyfish stings for about 2 years now (unless it's a Box jelly in Australia). Rinse copiously with hot water, scrape the area with a razor or credit card (which actually works), benedryl if you're prone to allergic responses and tinture of time for local stings.

I saw some stuff for sale in a local dive shop that was in an orange spray bottle. I think it was called Jellyfish Squish Sting Spray (or something like that). Kinda pricey @ 15.00/bottle. Does that stuff work?

I used some stuff that comes in a tube and (forgot name right now lol) and it works pretty good. ALthough girlfriend offered to pea on it for me, she was pretty sure that would help

I did not know about the vinegar being removed from the first aid of Jelly stings.Thanks Val, I'll take that out.

I have an amonia stick that is for bee stings. Not sure if it works. I've used it and was not sure if it helped or not.
I also have some Redmond clay (powder), when mixed with water it makes a kind of sting extracting mud. Also works good for bee stings, bug bites and probably a few hundred other things.
After a few discussions on this board I'm convinced that when it comes to stings from a Lions Mane or an Egg Yolk jelly,(which I have had the pleasure of both stinging me ) The only for sure cure is Time. But believe me after a few hours, the minimal pain, goes away. But if you get back in for another dive, the pain will come back for a short while.
I like the hot water and credit card trick. I will try that the next time I inadvertinly(sp?) kiss a jelly.
If nothing else, its a good reminder to look up while you are ascending.

one of the other divers at sund on sunday let me try that stuff. it had a whole bunch of unpronounceable chemicals in it. it worked for about 10 minutes and then the stinging came back. it might help if you were in intolerable pain with no other remedy/solution around, but i'm not running out to buy any....

I also bring a tube of topical cream to numb the pain - once it's scraped off with a credit card and flushed with hot water, I dry it and put on the topical cream.

I was the recipient of LOTS of jelly stings while working in Alaska @ a salmon hatchery.............we never did anything but just wait for it to wear off. Unconfortable, but not unbearable; after awhile we just got used to it.

Yeah I went fishing in Alaska and the red jelly sting was a way of life. Just annoying, like neddles. Are there any local jellies that we need to watch out for in terms of getting you deathly sick, ill or put you in a HUGE amount of pain?

Got a Lion's Mane sting. Happily (well, sorta) went back to the ER kit for the vinegar I've been carrying around for years. Get to try this out.
Splash it on > NOTHING!
Try again > NOTHING!!! :angry:

OK, saturate paper towel, lay it on face. Sigh, still nothing.

Water faucet available. Hmmm, not supposed to work. Desperate by now, I'll try it.
Aghhhh!! Works good! But the wrong way. Won't do that again.

Probably the best remedy I've heard is liberal infusion of rum, internal.

Went home, investigated. Vinegar no longer recommended. No substitutes provided (2 years ago). Have not checked recently.

Well, she doesn't recommend urine... but she'll be the first to offer to pee on you when you get stung (while she's getting into her kit to help you with scraping and hot water).

Was of the impression that water had to be REALLY hot to do any good by denaturing the nematocysts.
I carried vinegar around for 10 years. Don't think I'd be inclined to be boiling water and carrying it around in a Thermos for just this eventuality.
AND-NW divers always get stung in the face. Boil your nose anyone?!

just a quick side note from my experience.

If you get stung or have a close encounter with a Lions Mane it is a good idea to try to wipe or rinse off the outside of your gear before you take everything off. There can often be stinging cells remaining on the outside of your hood, gloves, suit, etc that can hit you once you expose your skin. Something as simple as wiping with a gloved hand and rinsing with sea water can often be enough, though a scrape or fresh water rinse is helpful.

Good point. Remove gloves and hood carefully and rinse carefully if you're in danger of being stung or have already been stung. Darn tentacles keep firing even if they're no longer attached.

Defied: I'll pee on your sting if you want. It won't help at all, but it would provide some entertainment

Any kind of topical anesthetic will help with the discomfort (look for lidocaine in the ingredients), but mostly, around here, it's "tincture of time" as there is nothing deadly in our waters (unless you turn out to be allergic).

2 years and he's still whining about a little sting on his upper lip! Jeez.... I'd call you a girl, but I don't want to insult our female board members (plus Ppants would ) . I'd say what a baby, but baby 'brewer would be insulted. , so have a and quit complaining.
