Dumbe question about under armour

Post by jOetheDIVR2 »

I was thinking about wearing my Under Armour stuff under my wet suit when in the sound.... we will be doing our traditional day after thanksgiving dive and was thinking it will be nice to keep me warm

I'm not sure how well UnderArmour insulates when it's wet. Maybe a 1mm neoprene skin or a shorty wetsuit might keep you warmer.

There really are no dumb questions when you dive. Or at least I've never heard one. Except when a buddy had too much to drink after a dive.

The Under Armour should not help you keep warmer. It may help you to slip your wetsuit on and off. When I dive a wetsuit, I wear a polyester dive skin underneath because it makes it easier to don and doff the suit, but it does not keep me warmer.

If wearing a wetsuit, the way to get warmer is to get a thicker wetsuit. In the Puget Sound, the better answer may be to get a drysuit.

Try it and let us know. Can't hurt, might help. In my opinion, it might add a bit more insulation and maybe reduce water circulation.

I wear Under Armor with my semi-dry, doesn't keep me warmer but makes the suit go on nice and easy, holds up well too...

I would say, "Try it and find out" if for nothing else, it helps you get in and out of your wet suit,It would be worth it.
In the mean time, if your going to do alot of diving around here, keep an eye out for a good deal on a dry suit.
They are not as expensive as you might think, if you shop around for one. I heard from someone today that, Tac. Scuba has a good sale on Bares dry suit's. :smt064

The nice thing about something like Under Armour is that it still provides some insulation when wet. So I might be able to see some benefit to coming out of the water in the cold, and not peeling off neoprene down to your bare skin. It may also reduce water circulation, but I think you'd be better off with a shorty or something for added insulation. Or it might interfere with seals around your neck and wrists if it's too big, which would actually make you colder. Hard to say I suppose.

Underarmor was developed to feel like cotton but wick sweat more efficiently than cotton. It does the latter well and the former not-so-well (depending on individual body/skin chemistry). It will provide some insulation by virtue of the fact that it's a layer that can trap air or water next to the skin which your body can warm.

You'd probably be better off with a rashguard. Especially at the price. If you were in a drysuit underarmor can help protect your insulative layer from the funk that develops.

I would suggest to keep dropping hints to the family the you want Santa to bring you a new dry suit for Christmas, sorry that does not help for the earlier Thanksgiving dive. GO DRY STAY WARM

I don't think it insulates at all. It will make getting in and out of the suit easier though. Make sure that if you suit has seals at the wrists, ankles and possibly neck that the UA is not between that and your skin, or else you'll get more water circulation and thus lose heat.

Where it helps is to take up some of the space between you and the suit which helps to minimize water flow. The less water movement that you have between you and the suit, the warmer you will be. A properly fitting wet suit will keep you warm, one that has lots of gaps and wrinkles and spaces, won't keep you as warm.

I know lots of people who wear similar garments under their wet suits. It certainly won't make you colder.
