Don't Mess With Me!

My wife and I came across this guy at Redondo Tuesday evening. He wasn't particularly aggressive except for this little flare, warning us to keep our distance from his egg mass. We chose to respect him and moved around to the other side of the tire pile he was watching. Well, that wasn't good enough for him. As we were snapping pictures of a nice little decorated warbonnet, my wife felt something weird and sort of freaked out. Then she realized: the lingcod had bitten her hand! It didn't do any damage, but she could feel the teeth through her glove. She settled down and started laughing instead of screaming, but by that time I was checking for an air emergency or something. She managed to communicate to me that the fish had bitten her, and about that time he came after me. He only got my gauges, but it was enough for us to say "yes sir" and move away. He's at the tire pile down the big rope from the pier; I suggest folks keep their distance, because he does NOT like divers.

I got nailed by him in the middle of the day on Saturday. He's hilarious and relentlessly protective of his nest. I was coming up on the tires and remembered this post then POW! There he was.

Maybe they've got 2-way radios: "Diver coming your way. Turn it up a notch." My wife got video of the one at the VW charging at her Saturday.
