Ling with something in its mouth -- what?

Post by Peter Guy »

Lynne, Bob, Sam and I were at EUP last week and playing with our cameras. I found a ling (big one) that looked like it was trying to regurgitate something. It also had a BIG mouth so I took pictures.

Now I don't think Ling's have tongues, so what is it?

OK, that is just WEIRD. The only thing I've ever seen that coloring was this strange stuff around a Plumose Anemone once - which was supposedly the guts of the anemone but it had been mauled. :burntchef:

Reminds me of my fishing days when we would bring up something from depth and have the gas bladder sticking out the mouth. Maybe this is one that was drug up from depth and then released?

Here is a red snapper from down deep, with same gas bladder showing. Was from tip of Vancouver Island fishing. Caught in about 140' water.

That was my first thought.

They do have tongues, most bony fish do.
But I suspect that's a tumor/growth, which seem to be common around/in older fish mouths.

That doesn't look like a swim bladder to me, even a deflated one. And Edmonds is pretty shallow, so what's the likelihood that this guy was jerked up from a couple hundred feet by a fisherman and then got off?

But I'm with Dusty on this one!

Lingcod (and other greenlings) don't have swim bladders, so you can count that out.
