Spiny Lithoid Crab at cove 2

Post by fnerg »

There's a spiny lithoid crab at the deep pilings at Cove 2 (The ones perpendicular to the set that the boundary line goes along) that's been in the same spot for like, two weeks now. Do they really tend not to move around that much? Will it still be there when I go try to get a picture on wednesday?

I don't think they move around much, so odds are he'll still be there.

It's pretty common to find them in the dolphins ... all three sets that most folks frequent down deep. Getting a picture of them is another thing entirely ... they tend to hide back inside the cracks.

Same goes for the red brotulas that you see down there from time to time. I had better luck with those back when I had a simple hand-held camera and no strobes ...

And here's a puget sound rockfish (I think) hanging out in the same pilings:

Here's the whole set:

I ran into a spiny also, in a crack at Sund Rock. You are right about them being shy--when I first saw him he was out in the open. By the time I was in good camera range he was racing for shelter.

Also a Puget Sound rockfish, which is common in other parts of Puget Sound, but a species I rarely see at Sund Rock.
