That last one of the Jetty is beautiful. You do amazing work Jan. Blending the incredible photography and the equally amazing artwork, you really need to publish another book.

In awe.

Jan, I swear as this thread goes on, you just get more and more creative and the art gets more and more amazing. I love the "over and under" pages, and also your drawings of the topography of things like the Possession Point fingers. I'll say it again -- you need to put together a real book!

Thank you, thank you. It is always pleasure to find something new or even something ordinary and present it in different light.
The book issue keeps coming up, but I am affraid that putting one together takes a skill I just don't have :dontknow:
But I do appreciate input from all of you, fellow divers, dialogue and critique is important. Thank you again for your kind words.

I don't know if I agree with that Jan. Not sure what is meant by a "real" book but you did a great job with your coffee table book :smt038 .

Jan K wrote:I don't know about this one. Some of the muck which is playing a havoc with our visibility seems to be coming from the Bull Kelp. Long and short stringy snot.. Maybe part of the reproduction cycle? Any ideas ?

We did a bull kelp dive in Mendocino, CA in June and noticed the same vis problem. The water was clearer up top and as we descended into the kelp it got muckier. It also seemed to get warmer. Did you notice if the water got warmer where you experienced this? Unfortunately, I don't recall if there was any of the stingy stuff. At the time we thought it was decaying bull kelp that was the culprit. But reproduction seems a possibly too.

Very cool, Jan! I knew that the metridiums eat the egg yolk jellies, because at certain times of year you can see many captured, but I didn't know other anemones liked jellyfish, too. Battle of the pnematocysts, I guess!

That lion's mane doesn't appear to be in very good shape, no tentacles visible or anything; was it still alive, or could you tell?

Dave, there was not sign of life left in that lion. None of the usual pulsating - "I want to get away" which you usually see when anemone catches one of the Fried Egg or Lion Mane.. I don't know what is the vital part of jelly which terminates its life...
Sometimes a very tattered jelly will swim by, still very much alive, other times a lifeless clump of jelly matter resembling discarted plastic bag drifts by, looking very much dead.

OK, thanks. I was wondering because of the location as much as anything else; I don't recall seeing a lion's mane down at the bottom before, I've always found them way up in the water column (usually right in my face during bad viz).

Here is an example why identifying some fish by color doesn't work.
I wonder about the camouflage skills of the fish on the bottom picture.
Maybe some of them are just show-offs :)
