Red Brotula: sund rock

Post by mz53480 »

I saw a Red Brotula at Sund Rock today, at about 60fsw on the north wall. It was way back in a boulder 'den' like area.
I have some (slight) video of it, will get it posted soon.
First for me. I've heard of them, but never seen any.

Very cool!

They are very very diver shy.

There has been a resident pair on fish pen wall at 80 or 90 fsw for years.

It seems that once they move in they tend to stay for awhile, so I'd make a mental note of the location and come back from time to time and see if they move in.

I found that if I approach the area where I know they are carefully, slowly, keeping my light back I can get a chance for a good look and maybe on picture then they back into their hidey hole.

I saw 2 on the north wall a couple of weeks ago. Was very excited to see them there as I've only seen them on Fish Pen wall at Sund Rock before and I'm not crazy about that particular profile. They were quite shy and never got a good photo. I tried for a photo for awhile but when I finally had a good shot a Copper Rockfish photobombed it.

Hmmm... i wonder if the fish pen pair has moved for some reason? The one in the video is a mature adult.

Middle of fish pen wall, excellent chance to see a couple. About 100 fsw.
Never seen them on North Wall, nice find.

At least one of them is still there. Saw it again on Wednesday this week. Looks like they've moved in.
