Cool! From the second pic it looks like some sort of amphipod/isopod. Where was this?

Ahh, I think you're right on the amphipod. This was Porpoise Bay in Jan 2015.

yep, an amphipod- Podocerus cristatus. Comes in a wide variety of cool colors
