Puget Sound Conch?

Post by derekcs »

Last night at Redondo, I found what looked like a conch shell that you'd see in the Caribbean. Pictures are attached.

I tried matching it to a species on this page for PNW gastropods, but didn't see anything obvious given the size and shape.

Anyone know what species this is? Did somebody dump a vacation souvenir overboard?

What’s interesting Derek is the little hole. That is how the conch is removed. A hole is made at the foot to release the conch meat. It looks pretty small compared to the ones I’ve seen in the tropics though.

Yeah I'd say somebody discarded the shell and threw it into the water

I'm trying to guess what made the hole.

Usually it is a human to release the conch meat to eat.

Hammer and a screwdriver. Then a thin knife is inserted into the hole to cut loose the conch meat.

Then sauteed in a coconut breading... heaven!
