Invert ID help

Post by Scott G »

Anyone know what these are of hand? Going through photo's, away from books.

They are between 1-3' in height in ~35' of water, in Oregon...

photo's kinda lousy with 6' visibility, surge and man those things move quick in the surge, had to crank on the shutter speed and ISO to get any type of shot.

are they hydroids of some sort? I think.

Stalked hydroid (i'm making that up)?

Thanks in advance,
Scott

They look like Pink Mouth Hydroids....very delicate looking little critters. Ectopleura marina. Saw a few of these this past week myself. I seem to find them in areas with a lot of water movement. San Juans, Coastal areas, Deception Pass.

I agree on the hard to get a decent photo bit! even if they aren't moving constantly the camera just doesn't want to focus on that delicate little head.

Actually not to far from it... lots of beach dives in Oregon... I've walked into a hundred different places on the South Coast... as long as you can accept that your dive is going to begin and end with some high gradient hiking and your going to get smashed into some rocks from time to time, Oregon is your oyster :)
