Something different -Diving at Avalon

Post by MikeMeagher »

If you ever get the opportunity to dive So. California do it. There's some great diving there. One easy way is to make a trek to the city of Avalon on Catalina Island, spend the night at a local hotel, and do a shore dive at the Casino landmark. Its an easy shore dive, and typical of the area. Here's video taken a few weeks ago. There was a lack of giant kelp, but that will be back this summer. Lots of fish there, and they are used to being fed by the divers that simply banging your hands together bring them coming. FYI, video was taken with a GoPro Hero4 in a Deeppro systems domed housing. Enjoy...

I learned to dive in Avalon circa 1990. Casino Point dive park rocks. I missed the ferry from long beach for my open water dive and took a helicopter to the island so i didn't miss out.

I spent 3 days there last October, and we had just mind-blowing diving. Water conditions were wonderful, visibility was amazing, and as always, the water was full of life -- although the kelp is gone, and there were no nudibranchs :(

Yes, Avalon is nice. But. if you like diving at Avalon.. you really should do some dives at other parts of the island from a dive boat. Mainland based boats will dive the Isthmus area that has much better diving. Video from a day of boat diving that I took last summer at the Isthmus is below.:
