I promised my wife a camera

Post by JJHACK »

when she passed the open water test and became certified. Nothing like a Natgeo set-up but something to capture some underwater pictures. She wants to share with friends and family or to post on the web, her facebook stuff.

I'm torn between the Sealife brand and the Olympus TG4 with the Ikelite housing either choice with a YS-03 strobe. I think I can get the Olympus system a bit cheaper, at around 1000 bucks complete.

Gotta say I'm leaning strongly towards the Olympus as it's already waterproof without the housing so if the housing leaks I'm still safe to a certain degree. The reviews and macro capabilities are getting rave reviews as well.

If you have used either one, or both chime in with your valued opinion.

I have a SeaLife HD+
Pros: comes sealed, reasonably big buttons, easy to use.
Cons: Need to hold it still for good videos. I added it to a tray then added two SideKick lights. I'm considering adding more weight to the system to help stabilize it. Tends to shift to the red in color, I point it straight up to get proper white balance.
Sample: See my Hornby Island Video at https://vimeo.com/206469512

I know nothing about the Olympus.

Cheers,

John

I have a camera for sale. Might be a bit more than you're looking for, but I'm offering it at a good price. It's a Sony Alpha NEX-7, with a generic housing. Comes with a dome port adapter for wide-angle photography, a spare battery and charger, and extra o-ring for the housing.

I used it once, for a trip I was taking while my regular camera housing was being repaired. Figured I'd keep it around for a spare rig, but haven't used it for two years. The camera comes with the standard 18-55 mm lens, but it's one of those 4/3rds cameras that you can purchase additional lenses for if you want to.

Looking to sell the whole kit for $400 ...
