time to replace neck seal?

Post by Jeff Pack »

I've found lately if I go fully vertical with a bunch of air in my drysuit, it burps out the neck.

I figure I've 150+ dives on that neck seal.

Replace time? (Silcon SiTech one on my Fusion)

Burping is normal when you are vertical. If you ain't gettin wet your good unless your lookin for an excuse to try something new.

That's definitely a sign for me with my latex seals, but I don't know how the silicone ones fail. When latex gets that lax, it will rip soon.

Not a big deal replacing them so I guess it's better to ere on the safe side. If it's latex you can do it yourself so it's not all that pricey. There's several videos on line that will give you step by step instructions and it's kind of cool to be able to say I did it myself! If it's neoprene that's a whole new ball game.

It's so trivial to do the replacement, I do it frequently -- but I don't buy the expensive silicone seals.

Both neoprene and latex to relax over time so my become somewhat leaky on vertical hangs. If the latex, or silicone, looks good to visual inspection and isn't too old you can just put up with it. How much and how long is up to you.

I have never seen or heard of a seal 'blowing' while on a dive. Possible I suppose but all my experience is tearing on don/doff with the extra stretching.

same, I've only ever torn wrist seals on don/doff.

I keep thinking sometime to just not fix the wrist seals since I drive dry gloves. If I cut a glove, it is what it is, but replacing wrist seals that dont do anything adds up over time.

Yeah, depends on how secure you feel with a glove rip. I did that for awhile but it always made me think. I don't use the heavy duty smurf gloves, just cheapy thin neoprene/dish washing type.

Yes. I used to dive w no wrist seals, but heavy duty dry gloves. I found that I was getting a lot of leaks that way, and reconfigured my DC rings where I had wrist seals again, and switched back to the orange gloves. This has been working really well for me.

My main concern is a suit flood with a deco obligation....I can handle almost anything for an hour....but the second hour can be torture if Im flooded, which has happened to me more times than I care to admit.

As far as the neck seal burping. ...yeah, that happens. Especially on a CCR, and especially when you use your suit for buoyancy, and especially when you go vertical. I try not to go vertical on deco, but it happens sometimes. Holding trim is murder on my back, especially after an hour or so......

Replaced the seal today, getting so bad it wont hold much air using the suit for buoyancy.
