New Computer

Post by seattlepaul1975 »

Now that I am back from my Thailand vacation and ready to dive in the cold :) I am going to start my gear purchasing in the next week or 2.....

Trying to decide on computer, most people I have talked to say the Zoop is good for what you need especially for starting out.

Thoughts?

I'm pretty sure that the Zoop does not have back lighting....

Can you shine a light on it and see it well? I know it doesn't have back light...that was the one thing I was concerned about.

I've had a few Suunto comuters - In general, they are decent computers but have a few drawbacks...

They are ultra conservative - Depending on the way you look at it, this is a good or bad thing.

Battery - The battery charge indicator on the Suuntos is horrible. I've booted my Cobra up on shore and it's said "OK" only to have it completely die at depth. I've also had my Suunto D4 reboot itself in the middle of a dive because the batterry was low - although the indicator said the batter was "OK". Also, the replacement battery for Suuntos are very specific - I cant think of the battery manufacturer off the top of head - but using the same size Duracel will void your waranty (as I found out the hard way).

That said, the Suunto Zoop would probably make a good starter computer. Just make sure you replace the battery ar about a 30 dive interval and always have a spare in your dive kit.

I saw a new Liquivision Xeo for 750 somewhere. That comp will suit you today, and much further down the road if you go beyond recreational.

I have an oceanic pro plus 2 (with compass) I'll sell to you for $300.

Also have a Zeagle Ranger BC size XL I'll sell for $175.

Both in great shape.

No whales..but when I first heard the fish chomping on the coral with the "crunching" sound I was a bit surprised...never heard that before. The one thing I did hear that was freaky was hearing the other dive boats above us going around.

I heard the "crunching" in Bonaire. It was the Parrot fish scraping algae off the coral heads. Sounds really cool.

I'm in the same boat as well. I'm looking at the Zoop or the Hollis DG03. Anyone use both?
