Input Regarding Dive Lights Requested

Post by wenatchee »

Dear Board,

It has been a while since I have kept up with the topics. I am looking for a dive light that I can use with a Goodman handle or a similar setup (e.g., Sola's soft handle) and a powerful beam. I moved from the NW and dive in the Monterey, CA area. While my dives are still recreational, I am training to go deeper but not interested in cave diving or entering wrecks. I have been looking at lights without a canister like the Sola Tech 600 and Finnsub models. I would appreciate your input or, pointing me in the direction of a thread that already exists on this topic.

Thank you.

I guess I'll be the first to suggest a Dusty's. A nice canister light for a good price.

+1

If you have the spare change (1500 to 2000 - Light Monkey) there are some amazing lights out there, but Dusty's light is hard to beat for price and value - around $400? last time I checked?.

Plenty of us here dive them and would be happy to meet you for a dive so you can see them above and below water, and if you play your cards right Dusty will meet you and let you try before you buy.

If you don't want a canister, a DRIS 1000 or a DRIS shorty is a great buy and puts out lots of light at a fraction of the cost of the Sola Tech 600 (which I know nothing about). For me the replaceable standard batteries are a plus over rechargeables because they last a long time and I don't need to wonder about them when I have not used the light for a long time.

The DRIS 1k Shorty is a respectable light (soft handle), so is the light for me back up tech XML, but there is no soft handle for it I am aware of.

There was a private run of solid goodman handles for the DRIS shorty on ScubaBoard, but I dont know if any are left by now.

Thank you all for your input. I have never heard of the Dusty brand torches and will check them out along with the other suggestions.

I have not had the opportunity to check out Dusty's lights but everyone says good things about them. At this point in the game I have a DRIS 1K light and love it. Light weight, strong light and the batteries last me for several dives. Good luck which ever route you go.

DRIS is now making a soft handle for the 1K shorty

A Dusty's in my purchase list for sure, but in the mean time, I'm using a DRIS 1000 and the DRIS shorty and they both work very well even here in Seattle. the Dusty's does put out a better beam for sure, but for under $100, the DRIS lights work great.
