Soft Weight (seasoft)belt Question...

Post by BASSMAN »

Okay all you gear guru's
I have a 16lb "Sea Soft" weight belt that is leaking or leaching grey milky liquid.
after a brief internet search it has been determined to be the Lead byproduct and is considered an environmental hazard.
The Million dollar question is....
Is there any way to stop it? Or, do I just toss it out and drop the $$ for a DUI weight harness?

I've already seen a posting where some one soaked it in fresh water for a long time and that did not fix it.

I will check the "Sea Soft" website next but I thought I would toss it out here and see what kind of response I get.

I also have seen a few of my smaller soft weight pouches leak like this too. :dontknow:

I don't think there's a way to stop the leaching unless you 'reseal' all the lead pellits. That's why I have changed to the solid rubber coated lead weights.
It's not broken - it's just missing duct tape!

You have been waiting for a reason to get a DUI weight harness no? :smt064

Then I'll be buried in the silence of the answer.

No way to stop it once started. Initially the pellets are sealed (tumbled in graphite) but this soon wears away with mechanical rubbing. All soft weights are subject to this. Hard weights are also but have less surface area exposed for their volume.

One woman I know got tungsten carbide. Even more dense than lead and essentially inert in salt water. Pretty expensive though.

Yeah, about 89 bucks a pound. I would have just found some rocks, and a backpack.

Before I took up diving I ended up with a box of maybe 20# of some kind of small rounded cutting bits (I think). The family used them as a joke to weigh down gift boxes. Somehow they disappeared. I sure could put them to a proper use now.

Any recommendations on brand, or where to get them. I have wanted some hard weights for awhile now.

Most of my soft weight pouches leech to some degree. I'm not sure that I see why that's a problem though.

That's only if they get wet. Which should make you safe :neener:
