A place for Oregonians to plan a car-pooling road trip, find a nearby diveable mudhole, and meet new local dive buddies.

Dive outfits and Charters on OR Coast? Want to dive OR Coast Close to PDX!

Post by BattagliaScuba »

My name is Chris Battaglia. In Sept or sooner I would like to dive on Oregon Coast. Looking to do that as close to Portland as possible. Would like to drive 3 hours or less. Are there any boats or charters or people that take people out in that area? Looking for good safe out fit to dive with. Any one know of an outfit in Lincoln city or Newport area?

I have done 66 dives and a lot of dives in Hood canal. I have my Naui Advanced Diver Cert. Have Mask snorkel and fins, I have place I can rent every thing else.

Any help any one could give me would be great!

I can dive during the week too!

Thank You!!

Hey Chris!
So in my years diving in oregon no, there are no dive charters that I've ever heard of, however down in Eugene there is a club that dives once a month and maybe people there would want to dive. I'm in the Pdx area. What are you wanting to dive for? Usually diving on the coast is for a reason since visibility can be interesting, Newport has the fingers to dive, some small kelp areas on the rocks with life but again visibility can be 3' once you get deeper there you can try and catch crab. When I was in college I dove Florence a bit because the crabbing there is/was amazing, however usually crab are better in the colder months. I'm planning on doing a day or two down there later this year for crab. There are also lakes to dive if you are looking for just putting around and having better visibility

The Eugene Dive Club does have a charter scheduled around Labor Day out of Garibaldi, and I believe a couple of spots recently became available. PM me more information (I'm on the EDC board- you can sign up here to get on our e-mail list: http://www.eugenediveclub.com/) . Spear fishing is allowed on this trip. I have heard that South Beach Scuba out of Depot Bay (formerly out of Newport) has a charter operation, but I don't know anything about it- might be worth a call.

South Beach dive shop is now in Depoe Bay and is planning on running a dive boat there. I talked to the owner a few months ago and have not been back down there since then so you would have to call him and see how it all works.
