DUI Rally at the Oregon Coast Aquarium

Post by spatman »

has anyone here done this event in the past? it looks like i'll be out there for it this year and will probably go check it out.

i can't find any pre-registration info online, so i'm going to try to contact both the DUI folks and the aquarium sometime soon. but if any of you have been there before and have any advice, i'd appreciate it.

We went last year. You get tickets through your local dive shop. We used Thunder Reef last year. It is a cool way to dive in the Aquarium.

so do you register for a specific time slot beforehand? or just show up around the time you're hoping to dive?

For an extra $250, I bet you can get a combination Aquarium-Drysuit-Diver and Underwater-Photograph-Posing-For-Dry-Aquarium-Tourist's-Pictures speciality c-card!!

You signup for a time slot. You can also have a catered dinner in the aquarium after hours and for like $150 you can spend the night in the aquarium. I think it was $38 each to dive and $38 each for dinner. I got it for my roomie for her birthday she is still blabbing about it. I have to admit it was fun waving to the kids outside.

It is also a major recruitment drive to get volunteer divers. They want divers to be on either work one day every three weeks or two days every six weeks. When you volunteer there are cheep rooms at the Hatfield Science Center.

thanks for the info, jeff. we'll probably skip the dinner and sleepover part, but diving the tanks sure sounds fun.

i got an email back from the folks at DUI, if anyone's interested:
Given the very firm dive schedule and the needs of the aquarium (and its inhabitants), as always, the limited number of tickets are only available from the participating dealers. Each dealer only has a few dive blocks for each day and must be contacted directly.

Since all proceeds from the event support the aquarium volunteer dive program, we want to ensure a sold out event that maintains the very carefully planned schedule. In order to do so, we rely on the local dealers that participate in the event to pass on all of the critical information, keeping divers on schedule for the best possible experience.

Here's a link to the event information:
http://www.dui-online.com/pdf/2009_rally_oregon.pdf

Participating Dealers include:
Steve's SCUBA - Milwaukie, OR 503-652-8860
Orca SCUBA - Wenatchee, WA 509-665-0660
Eugene Skin Divers Supply - Eugene, OR 541-342-2351
Hydrosports - Keizer, OR 503-304-5383
Thunder Reef - Vancouver, WA 360-573-8507
Sunset Sports -North Bend, OR 541-756-3483

Please be sure to let me know if you have any further questions.

Safe Dives!

We stayed at the "Inn At Yaquina Bay". It is a short walk to the Aquarium and has breakfast. Nice? It was clean. What can I say it is a hotel. http://www.innatyaquinabay.com/ :dontknow:

The La Quinta is a very short walk away from the aquarium. Try asking for the "diver discount", and maybe you'll get the aquarium volunteer discount. Newport's a day trip for me, but I know other volunteers who stay there w/o complaint.

I second Lorne's recommendation for La Quinta. They include breakfast and have internet etc. I would NOT recommend the Econo-Lodge in Newport. That place was very yukky.

Camping at Beverly Beach was nice and cheap though!
