NOAA picks Newport for Pacific operations center
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration announced this morning that Newport will be the home of the agency's Marine Operations Center-Pacific beginning in 2011.

The federal agency chose Newport over Seattle and Bellingham.

Hmmm wonder if it has something to do with the new head of NOAA being from Oregon?

Well... Funnily enough the Secretary of Commerce is a former Gov of WA. But yeah it is a little funny that the NOAA administrator is (still) a scientist from OSU.

Having just stepped off a NOAA ship yesterday I can tell you that everyone I met is scratching their head about the decision. Besides having no existing shipyards and Newport harbor being treacherous approach.... they're going to lose many long time employees in the move.

I guess it's just cheaper and easier in OR.

Oregon also has more Brown Recluse spiders than WA!

So is there a cheap and easy connection to having better beer in OR?

while the locals won't burn down their dock with fireworks, they may very wreck on the bar there... Assuming it was a soft grounding that would be funny.

The approach to the harbor has been mentioned as a concern. But really, hydrographic ships like the Fairweather and Rainier come and go just a few times each year, spending most of their time up in Alaska (or down for maintenance in the case of the Fairweather :la: ). I expect they'll continue to use big-city shipyards like Todd's in Seattle.

Perhaps the port of Newport paying for the construction of an entirely new facility had some influence on the decision? :uh:

What are you guys up for? Going to a whiskey bar? House party in combination with a BBQ?

Let's split this off before it goes too far, can one of the web geek mod types split this off?
